TRIO 9R- 59D. Speaker question.
 

I need to pick purchase a speaker for my Trio 9R 59D .
The service book said it is a 4 ohm speaker .. I can see so many 4ohm . .What watage is needed ?..Thank you .

Trevor,

The manual states "Maximum power output is 1.5 watts"
The original matching speaker used a 6 inch eliptical.

You can also use a 4 ohm speaker connected to the appropriate terminals which are clearly labelled.

Manual just said 4 ohm its the reason why i ask .

Looking all over. The 4 ohm speakers 1.5 watt .And they are all close to 15 watt .Would this show up in low voume if i had a 15 watt ?.

You could use almost any small speaker. The wattage does not have to match the Trio as long as it is the same wattage or higher.

The impedance does not have to be 4 ohms. 3 ohms is close enough and if you use an 8 ohm or even 15/16 ohm it would still work, OK you would not be able to get the full volume but there will be more than enough for general listening.

For years I used a 3 ohm 7 * 4 out of an old telly then an 8 ohm car radio speaker in a plastic pod rated at ten watts.

As long as you mount on a baffle board or even better in a small box that's all you need.

See Mos and John . Will wait and see what Graham comes up with .The one on Amazon looks good .

And just a word about the Trio no2 .I thionk thats sorted out as well i fitted the 3 new caps .
But after i switched it on it was making a terrible hum .It was worse than before i started on it . Took the cover off this morrning just to check if i had put the caps in the right place ,I had but i had solderd 2 earth wires from the caps on to a tag board . With only the centre tag going to earth .I had put one earth to a tag going to nothing .So no earth on one cap = HUM . Next try i got it right and took an extra earth strap [braid ] to the cap with no earth . Now its better than the first Trio .Very little hum on both receivers .And what hum there is, then another speaker will fix it 100%.

The picture of the caps . So the purchase was not for nothing .
As it is i have two good receivers .
One looks better than the other .But a little paint on the cabinet will spruce it up .
All down to the members of this forum .
I am so greateful to you all . The pictures were taken befor i had to fit the extra earth lead for the 3 cap .

I found a 1970's Philips car extension speaker which, when connected to my own 9R59DS, performed as well as the speaker supplied by Trio.

However the external finish is poor including rusting of the mounting bracket. It would have been FOC, but I don't think your spending £2.90 on having it posted to you would have been good value for money. Sorry.

Unless you plan on spending a fortune I think you'd do best buying a driver unit as suggested in post #12 and making your own enclosure. I have to confess that the speaker used with my JRC NRD-525 is just a bare driver unit stuck to the side of a filing cabinet using its own magnet.

You could also try FreeCycle or even look for a scrap domestic radio from which you could use the speaker and cabinet.

Incidentally the mains hum from the speaker was at a very low level even though my own set still has its original smoothing capacitors and the mains transformer hasn't been repositioned.

After reading this i have ordred a NUVO extension speaker off ebay till i can find a suitable candidate. Its only to prove a point when it comes , that there is less hum after the work we did . Thank you again .
