Meguro MSG-2851 FM-AM VHF sig-gen.

Has anyone come across one of these before? Really well made piece of kit, weighs ton and even has a motor driven dial. Found a date of Dec.78 inside. A quick Google search found nothing except Meguro made production line test equipment.

Nothing wrong with this one except an intermittent mains switch and no output on the second highest output range, though I'm in no hurry to open that coil box!

Haven't come across one of them, or any information on it, but it looks like a really nice piece of kit. If it does have production testing heritage, it should be a stable, consistent and reliable workhorse (once fully sorted- a common and slightly oxymoronic theme here with old gear generally seems to be, "they're great devices- once mended"!)

There seemed to be an interim period with high-grade test gear in particular where the metalwork and mechanics very much stayed with the "thermionic" way of doing things, even when semiconductors had very much taken over, and this looks like a classic example. Can't help thinking that the designer may have owned, used or seen a TF144H or TF995 at some point as inspiration....

Hi Turretslug,

Yes definitely shades of Marconi, when I first seen it I was thinking it had been made under licence. Yes the construction is very robust and a real throw back to the valve era.

I've seen a few Meguro FM sig gens on eBay UK over the years but nothing like this one, rather much smaller. I think they're a Japanese company?

Andrew

PS they are Japanese, merged with Keisoku Giken in 2016. Bet if you asked they'd have service information!

Hi Andrew,

Yes it is Japanese, the Meguro is a river in Japan. I had a look around the net and like you found some other sig-gens that were smaller etc. but nothing like this. It's the kind of thing you'd expect Collins to be using on their production line for aligning aircraft radios!
