Inexpensive Neodymium magnets
 

I have just salvaged a very powerful little magnet (7mm diam. x 2mm thick) from an o/c crankshaft position sensor. (Effectively a freebie)
Not all engine/wheel position or movement sensors are of this type, but plenty are.

Old hard drives are also a good source, if you can get into them. Watch your fingers they are very powerful.

Not rare earth magnets, but very strong anyway, and there are hundreds freely available.

Magnetrons.

I leave them in the weather for a couple of months which kills the glue that's used, unclip the heatsink, and you get two very strong round magnets.

Here are some of my neodymium magnets. The cylindrical one came out of an old shake and light torch and the others were purchased on eBay. These magnets are great for making many interesting projects. I have made a pulsed DC motor from these magnets using an old VCR drum head, an electromagnet and a reed switch.

Please remember to keep them away from heart pacemakers and colour CRTs..

I have two hard disk drive magnets currently holding a wrist rest of my own design to my desk (a right angled piece of steel that was once part of a box, with some foam on top).

I've used the magnets from a hard drive to hold doors open in our house. They are strong enough to stop the doors closing when the wind blows and tries to slam the doors shut.
