GILES cartoon.
 

I have always been a great admirer of Giles cartoons that appeared in the EXPRESS newspapers for many decades. I have most of the annuals including the first one from 1944.
The details were always interesting. He never included just a lorry, a box with many wheels or a TV receiver, just another box with knobs.
The exact model could always be identified even down to the TV aerials on the roofs of the buildings.He even included two leads entering the back of the TV, aerial and mains lead.
Now can anyone identify the TV set featured in this cartoon from 1960? There are two clues in the picture [if you look carefully] Regards, John.

Never seen one in the flesh but worked on a fair few of the V210's back in the day.

I also thought PYE, and what looks like their logo can be just about seen on the box.

I always used to give my father the Giles Book for Christmas. Here's another challenge from the first book I gave him. Grandma got in the way of the cabling on this one.

My Dad is your classic restless channel surfer, it is literally impossible to settle down and watch anything on the TV when he is in front of it.

His partner eventually bought herself a second Sky remote so that she could calmly and pointedly switch back to whatever she was watching that he kept zapping away from.

I've got a couple of Giles annuals that were my Dad's I'll have to check them out for TV sets.

I can remember one page for the launch of Radio 1 which has all the children in the family listening to transistor radios, the mop haired boy having one for each year.

Yes Andy and Laurence! A PYE V210A! This model is featured a couple of times in Giles cartoons. I wonder if he purchased one? They also produced variants such as the 510A as John Joe has mentioned. The 'A' at the end of the model number is the revealing bit.
The Grundig 5010 series also appears a few times even with GRUNDIG on the front!

The motor driven units by all the leading manufacturing companies were incredibly reliable. The only fault I ever encountered was on the ULTRA 2181 series c1961 [the one with the channel indicator resembling a telephone dial] when the aluminium 'sloppy coupling' used to snap. I still have one in the odd bits box!

It does, however, seem to have been removed from its position atop the BBC wing of Ally Pally and remounted at ground level, losing one set of aerial support spikes in the process.

And I thought my local council was a nightmare to deal with. Thankfully, they don't consider rejection of a planning application worthy of a firing squad!

There seems to be a 405 aerial on top of the house, given the proximity of the transmitter I wouldn't have thought it needed one :)

Is that loaded umbrellas the bureaucrats are pointing?

Here's the Radio 1 Giles strip I mentioned earlier, I managed to scan it with a bit of effort, but some other strips of interest were a bit to hard to scan as the book wouldn't lie flat enough & I didn't want to force it flat & damage it.

Hello Peter, Feb 6th 1973. Seventeen years after AP was retired but it was so well known and still is, being associated with early TV.
Another shot of AP with the familiar H aerials no doubt needing an attenuator [May 4th 1965] that will always be linked to early British TV.
Many years ago a local estate agent in Wimbledon used to have a model house in his window that a sported the familiar H. Regards, John.

Thanks John, I love the Grandma Giles one. Does anyone know how long the Band 1 transmitter aerials remained on AP mast after Crystal Palace took over?

Were they just embedded in Giles' memory?

The house was probably the Airfix bungalow from their 00 trackside accessories range. An estate agent in Romford used to have a selection of them in his window. Mine still exists, having been passed down to my son, but the aerial is long gone. I think they are still available.
