Pye dual standard TV set in 1960.

From the Wireless and Electrical Trader, 27 August 1960. Page 577.

Pye Group Festival Hall Exibition

A switchable 405/625 21" TV receiver to operate on both the 405 line system in Bands 1 and 3 and on the 625 line system in Band 4.
The set had press button change-over from one to the other and covered 51 channels - 13 on 405 lines and 38 on 625 lines. Compared with a normal set there were two additional controls and two aerial sockets.

Does it describe the chassis, a derivative of the 400 range, the 600 range or a one off? I don’t have access to the trader to check.

Was that the Pye 67 chassis?.

This sounds like the prototype V700D released just one year later. John.

Re: Pye dual standard TV set in 1960.

There's no further information about the Pye dual standard TV. It's likely to be a laboratory prototype rather than anything that would be in production a year later.
Seems that in 1960 Pye didn't attend the Earls Court radio show but instead the Pye Group held a three day exhibition of the their products at the Festival Hall.
At the opening of the Pye Group's three-day radio, TV and electronics exhibition at the Festival Hall, London, on Monday, Pye sprang a whole series of surprises on the trade - some intended for immediate production and sale, and others shown to support the Pye campaign for local broadcasting stations. of the six "star" innovations the most spectacular was:

The first all-British full size transistorised TV portable, the TT1 will be available almost immediately at about £100.

A small TV remote control unit to be used in the model V210A.

A Pye 23in console TV receiver using a new type tube. Likely to be the model V600A.

R35 transistorized clock radio.

For "Local Broadcasting" Linked to Pye's drive for the eventual establishment of local broadcasting were three special exhibits designed to show how the plan could be developed.

A switchable 405/625 TV receiver.

A "local broadcasting" receiver. Known as model R38, the tuning scale covers 108Mc/s and is marked "local broadcasting".

"Radio Westminster" a working local radio station complete with studio...

Hi Frank,
I'll keep on looking for interesting articles in those old trade magazines. Perhaps that 21" dual standard receiver finally morphed into the V700D?
In 1960 Pye boss C. O. Stanley was in charge of Pye and it's well known he was no advocate for the 405 line system. At least the 405 line system kept the foreign imports at bay for ten years or so.

A lot of thought and research went into those decisions and the eventual outcome which was designed to last many years. Contrast that with today were Freeview, Freeview HD, different coding methods, change of channel groups on Freeview and then DAB/DAB+ have meant rapid changes and obsolescence of relatively modern equipment.

This may have been the type of set on display at the Festival Hall exhibition.

The photo is from the brochure from the event, but there is no further information in there about it.

Re: Pye dual standard TV set in 1960.

The rental firm I worked for in the 1960s had a few 405 line only 21" Pyes, model simply labeled V700, sent to our branch. As I remember, we never received any service information for these sets, but within a few months we had the first batch of the model V700D, which proved to be superb performers on 405, but after fitting a UHF tuner to one, did not look so rosy on the test signal that we got from the temporary Pye mobile demo test transmitter set up near Derby. Bridging two (HT) tags on the uhf connection tagstrip enabled the VHF tuner on UHF. Some interesting continental signals were thus received - early DX TV. ;D Tony.
