Default Philips by dumpster.

This Philips TV was dumped by someone in a bad part of town. Not far from my shop.

I think it is a CTX receiver.

Get it - someone on here will have it, and some parts are getting scarce.

Cheers,

Hi Steve,
It's not in a very pleasant place. It's next to the take-away food shop.

...and it's probably caked in a layer of dusty frying oil, inside and out.

I saw a G8 impaled face-down on a concrete bollard a few years ago.

Hi Nick,
I've looked at the set and it's not very nice.

It must be that time of year David. After reading your thread I had a look around and discovered this 14" version of the CTX and a Bush DAC90A under a bush. A Bush under a bush I suppose you could say. Odd thing is I have only just cut the grass and didn't notice them.
You really must clear up your back yard. That carpet looks as if it might have a bit of wear left in it given a good shake..

I suppose a better name for your thread might be 'Once Loved'. Its strange how we dump and cast off items that just a few years before would have demanded many hours of overtime to acquire. The time between acquisition and dumping is reducing at an alarming rate.
Dismayed, John.

Hi John,
A Bush under a Bush, how about that! Well at least in West Sussex they dump sets in better places than they do in the North-East of England. Is that the 14 inch version of the CTX?

Yes David, it is the 14" manual version and it came off the tip a few years back. It only needed an electrolitic in the field stage and away it went for another 15 years. The tubes in the 14" versions lasted for ever as they did in the KT3 series but yours [Come clean it IS yours..] is the 20" version and the tubes in those and the 16" lasted about 18 months. I don't think I ever saw a decent picture on one. CTX, one of the best chassis ever produced by Philips. Happy Days. John.
P.S. They were skulking under the tree and missed the blades..

Here's a closer picture of this wretched set. At least it still got a plug. Only a brave person would dare to plug it into the mains.

Stop all this Wendy Woo nonsense David. I thought you were made of better stuff! Get that set dried out and get some mains applied. No pussy footing about with lamp limiters or variacs. [A variac won't work with this power supply if I remember correctly.] If you dry it out properly I reckon it will work but the tube will probably be flat..You started this nonsense so lets see how good you are at resurrecting a pile of indescribable junk!
I want to see results unless of course you have lost your shine..! John.

Hi Simon,
here's the plan. I leave the set where it is, connect it to the mains by a long extension cable, switch on from the safe distance and see what happens.

I had one of those! CTX-E chassis though there was a K30 in a cabinet that looked virtually identical.

The mechanical channel selectors were utter by the way, though I got them to work eventually by drilling tiny holes and squrting in Servisol.

Hi David, is this Skid Row or a neighbourhood not too far from here?

I've seen worse

What's the worse that can happen ?
Bright flash and a bit of smoke - incidentally, the "TV outside on an extension lead" bit brings back memories of my early jumble sale experimentation after the "old man" got fed up of a smoke logged house

Nick.
Fully agree - I've found at least 6 or 7 CT-X sets (mostly 17 and 20") dumped over the last 4 or so years. In all but one, the problem was channel selectors with extremely poor /worn/dirtycontacts. The other set had a shorted LOPTX.

You could tell that the previous owner had got frustrated with the tuning drift, as on more than one the preset buttons, tuning 'wheels' (or the area near them) were either worn, or utterly mangled from having been waggled, having things shoved down the side of them, or taped on them!

they're quite nice sets apart from that weakness, though. Will probably outlive most stuff produced after them.

go on - pick it up!
