Beautiful speakers R&A
Can anyone enlighten (see below some interesting pics!)
Already I think there's been some discussion about this rather subtly vintage coloured British loudspeaker brand? R&A Series MkII British patented Made in Wolverhampton.Guess they might be just the ticket for someone's design so I think I might sell them. Any advice most welcome! All the best, Dave

Re: Beautiful speakers R&A (Richard & Allen?)
'R & A' was Reproducers and Amplifiers Ltd. I know nothing of their products other than having seen a few around.
Conversely 'Richard Allan' were based in Batley, Yorkshire, forerunners of Fane and AFAIK it was a concocted name, there being no 'Richard Allan' himself. |

Re: Beautiful speakers R&A (Richard & Allen?)
Richard & Allan were the names of the sons of the founders. Their first products were Baffelette (? Spelling) extension speakers. Initially they bought in the drive units before making their own drivers. They were based in Cleckheaton.

Re: Beautiful speakers R&A (Richard & Allen?)
My Eddystone 840A comms receiver has a ~R&A~ speaker. It has the same "crossed-over-R&A-letters" logo on the end of the magnet though it just says "Made in England" with no mention of Wolverhampton.
"British patents 584354 486500 63080 and 65585; US patents 2235187, 2526830' netherlands patent 147771" I guess R&A got around a bit. If they were made in Wolverhampton I could understand Eddystone [who were based in Birmingham] choosing a 'just-down-the-road' supplier. Last edited by G6Tanuki; 28th Nov 2014 at 8:35 pm. |

Re: Beautiful speakers R&A (Richard & Allen?)
I should clarify my previous post by saying that Richard Allan did not use the & in their name. They did make good quality speakers at a sensible price.

Re: Beautiful speakers R&A (Richard & Allen?)
There is a bit of archive stuff about R&A here:
http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Reproducers_and_Amplifiers Their speakers were quite common in late 40's/early 50's stuff (Ferguson TV's etc). Don't know what happened to them?

Re: Beautiful speakers R&A (Richard & Allen?)
The scenes in 'The Imitation Game' featuring the bombe had a Richard Allan speaker hanging on the wall by the door. I think Richard Allan are still going, in Wakefield Road Brighouse now.

Re: Beautiful speakers R&A (Richard & Allen?)
Pye also used R&A loudspeakers in their products around the first half of the 60s. I had a Pye radigram from 1964 that certainly used them and an 11U chassis TV that also did.

Re: Beautiful speakers R&A
No connection. Rola was a separate maker as was Celestion and they merged to form Rola-Celection. Have a look on Wiki at Rola Speakers

Re: Beautiful speakers R&A
My very first pair of "hi-fi" speakers were a pair or Richard Allen RA-8s, I bought them at laskys oxford street and lugged them all the way home on the central line to stratford and then a twenty minute walk from the station............my arms were numb.
