40 Metre SSB Transceiver.
Well its finally completed, air tested and very happy with the reports. It has taken approx 9 months from conception to final testing, but worth every minute and few pence in versions and changes.
The concept was to build a 40 metre SSB exciter/ receiver, with enough RF to drive a 100W Linear. It was decided to build in modular form, thus if any changes were needed, and there were many, it would not be a high cost per pcb change. The main parts were the VFO and controller, and the SSB Modulator. I had help with the VFO/controller from my associate in Australia, and the SSB modulator from Motorola, along the way I "cribbed" circuits from application notes and other SSB projects. One area of concern, but not obvious, well to me anyway, was the rigidity of the power supplies. It essential that these are rock solid, otherwise lots of nasty effects happen. As you can only post 5 attachments per posting I will add postings, with photo's and schematics in order. If any member requires more info, please contact via Pvt message I realized at the "off" that it would not be a simple project, and without help from Forum members and others who I thank most whole heartedly, it would not have been possible.

Re: 40 Metre SSB Transceiver.
Super job, I bet it performs as well (if not better) as a £1k bought one. BTW what is the power out of this? I find 5W quite enough on PSK to get most of the world on the odd occasion when I do play radio.

Hi Merlin. 10W PEP at the moment.... with an "after burner" being made next..I bought a module from China with IRF530's. Just needs a psu, which will be made asap. Thanks for the comments.

Re: 40 Metre SSB Transceiver.
Nice job. Well done.
Good to see some "home brew" in amateur radio, where most use ready made these days. Hope to read about your 100w PA in due course. Maybe when all is working you could let us know when you may be operating so some of us on here can try to work you and hear your rig. John |

Re: 40 Metre SSB Transceiver.
Thanks John. I will post the PA when its done.... just getting the bits together... mainly psu bits.
I have also started the multiband version, so operating takes a back seat.

Re: 40 Metre SSB Transceiver.
That's a heck of a job you've done there. I like the way you have taken your time over it, not like me who tends to start construction before I've even finalised the design!
And it has a keypad! If anyone is interested, my latest Topband rig is on my website here: http://www.freewebs.com/g1hbe/topbandupdated.htm My pages will probably disappear later this year as I've stopped the payments...

Re: 40 Metre SSB Transceiver.
Nice conversion / mod Andrew......maybe we can start a new fangled craze...where Amateur radio is called Real Amateur Homebrew Radio. Sorry to offend any members who already are committed home constructors. It just seems that most QSO's are about how much money they spent on a new rig, not what they got out of building their own.
I know lots or Radio amateurs like DX hunting and "Square bashing", but not for me. Soap box put firmly away...... for now.

Re: 40 Metre SSB Transceiver.
I'm impressed: well done! Apart from the appearance of the front panel, I am impressed at the documentation you've produced. I look forward to hearing you using it on 40 m. Perhaps you could let us all know in advance - then hopefully you'll get some useful reception reports.

Re: 40 Metre SSB Transceiver.
Hi peeps and well wishers....to give us all a little time to arrange something... may I suggest Monday 10am say... 7.100 or there abouts........ unless someone else has a better idea..
It would be great to have more reports. I have just constructed a 80/40M filter module from Minikits....which I bought to "crib"...shhhhh Needs testing on my Filter analyzer , Al...... the front panel was always going to be a problem, due to Letraaet not being available now.... if you could suggest improvements ?

Re: 40 Metre SSB Transceiver.
In these post-Letraset times you can make up a reasonable looking front panel by preparing your design in a PC drawing-package of your choice, printing it on the "put-it-through-a-laser-printer" PCB-resist film, transferring the printed image to the panel like you would do for a PCB, then protect it either varnishing it or cutting a thin sheet of acrylic to cover the whole front panel.
As to a 'net - if you make it USB then I could join in using my PRC320 (which being military only does USB). |

Re: 40 Metre SSB Transceiver.
If you make the front panel too good, people will think you're a plug and play operator who bought the set.
