The 377 family has the advantage over the Akai in that the speed change is done with an idler and stepped pulley rather than a capstan sleeve. Also, the tape tension is rather less and servo controlled in the manner of domestic Telefunkens. Add in a scrape roller and you have a transport which can punch well above its weight.

Ive got the akai crossfield unit, it just keeps going. Dug it out of the wardrobe after 15 years and it just fired up and worked. Lent it out to someone to transfer their tapes to MP3. Mine has the capstan sleeves and a slow/fast switch. It has a head shift for the tracks so it will do 2 or 4 track stereo./double sided etc
