Apologies of course - I should have said smoothing choke.

Thanks for the picture of the burn mark. It perfectly illustrates the folly of mounting an overrun resistor in this way.

Quad are a World respected manufacturer, and many of the referenced equipments have survived into old age despite some theoretical shortcomings, as indeed have I.
We can't know with any degree of certainty what influences, or knowledge, shaped the design at this late stage, but perfection, if it ever materialises, would surely rob us of the healthy debate that separates any camp.
We've explored likely reasons for the problem with the OP's particular amplifier. If they don't help, please come back with a new thread.
