I wouldn't write that idea off completely, magnetic ink character recognition typefaces have been around since the mid '50s

Can anyone date this Bush campaign seen in Gibraltar?

I would say around 1970 before the trade descriptions act came into force in the UK.
'Get a Bush and your set for life' was a logo used on the side of the Bush packing cases for the TV181 series.J.

Pictures of the workshop where I was service manager for the Enfield Highway Cooperative Society c1970/71.

The green tinge is down to the florescent lighting.

Hi.

I bet they were uncomfortable using that slogan on the Bush CTV25 what with it's dangerous EHT overwind.

I notice the 'Appointed Dealer' sign in the window and wondered what that meant in practice?

Meeting certain standards? Meeting sales targets? Undergoing training in selling and repairing the manufacturer's products? Did manufacturers have a financial interest in appointed dealers?

Apologies if this is hijacking the thread - mods please tell me off if appropriate!

Back then, if you weren't an appointed dealer, you couldn't get genuine parts or service data. You had to rely on the omnipresent "Trader" sheets or one of the others. All part of the old restrictive practices. Trader created their own data, which is why the layout and component numbers often differed. There would be one in every month's (weekly?) issue, along with the trade gossip.

Bush were rather good at enforcing a pervasive 'corporate' typeface-and-graphics; in "The Setmakers" there are several examples of how to render the Bush logo and such, as taken from contemporary 'guidance' documents.

I doubt the Bush area-sales manager [who wore a 3-piece suit and drove an Austin Westminster] would have been happy with small stores going off-image and developing their own non-corporate ad-style!

They still exist, try getting any service data or spares these days.

Hi robin,
thanks for that, i'd never really noticed, he passed away fairly young and the way he is there is how I remember him as a young active person full of life, the shop itself and it's Aladdins cave of mysterious contents to a young inquisitive child like me are very vivid memories even after over fifty years.

Slightly OT, but have you noticed how the Bush typeface and logo has become very different on the newer Argos TVs?
