Default Sound sales radio - anyone know anything about this?

I was given this radio a few weeks ago, haven't yet tried to power it up as it was stored in an outside shed ( if and when I do it will be on the Variac)
Anyone any info or recognise it?

Someone appears to have taken out the PX4 output valves, I have had one of these in the past & they work superbly!

If you haven't already, search for Sound Sales in the box above. There have been other posts featuring this chassis.

Looks as though it has a thumping big output transformer!

I bet that sounded good. I wonder if it was for use in a factory or similar?

Bill [p3*] is right Andy. In fact Zootermans enquiry [3/7/11] covered the same ground]. From the condition of you're find, it may be that the PX4's were extracted long before those valves became quite so sought after. These Tuners do appear to be quite rare so if a restoration is contemplated you will also find threads suggesting possible PX4 alternatives [4v or otherwise].

There is an article on Sound Sales and a very similar tuner in Radio Bygones Issue 148.

Yes of course there is and it wasn't that long ago either [the current one is 151]. How did I forget that.

Looks like a great restoration project you have there Andy. If I can assist in any way, just let me know.

I had one of these back in the 60's and it performed beautifully (mostly used for receiving Radio London on 266m!). I recall that it had variable selectivity by mechanically varying the spacing in the IF transformers. I believe they were used in schools. Tragically it was dumped when I went to college - I thought I kept one of the balloon PX4s because I liked the look of it (had no idea they would become sought after) but I've so far failed to find it.
