Default 746 Interesting Colour

I have bought at a car boot a 746 telephone. I think it is a hybrid, as it is marked 8746, but has a 500ohm ringer installed on a plastic base. Also it is two tone grey colour (not grey/brown colour) which I have never seen before. As it came it was wired with a 6 way line cord which looked liked it was wired as an intermediate extension (the middle one of 3 or more extensions). Does anyone know if the light/dark grey colour scheme was common or have I come across something unusual?

No, the two-tone grey version was a standard issue. It was more common in offices and suchlike though, the colours not being too popular among domestic subscribers.

Scroll down this page to see the various colours.

I can't explain the 500ohm thingy; the 8746 should total 4000ohms.

I think we might be talking at cross purposes. The "two tone grey" that Darren's link mentions seems to be the "grey/brown" that John talks of, which he says his isn't.

Could we have a pic, please?

I believe that (the lighter tone of) the standard "grey" was known as elephant grey, as distinct from the slate grey used in wiring colours and which later telephones such as the one pictured below more resembled:

The colours look to be more like

As far as handset colour is concerned. The dial ring is plain though.

That image looks like the standard elephant grey to me.

Photos can be very misleading, especially in artificial or dim light.

And these phones change colour quite dramatically over the years, particularly if they've been exposed to strong sunlight.

This is the two tone grey I am talking about -

And this is the brown and grey one that I thought was common in offices etc

Have I discovered something new/strange?

They look the same to me! Maybe I'm colour blind to some extent. Or maybe if they were side-by-side, I could tell the difference.

Nick,
like you I thought they were the same until I loaded the two links in separate windows so I could quickly switch between them. There is quite a difference.

For convenience of comparison, here is an image of both 'phones in post #8 side by side.

Thanks Darren.

They still look the "same" to me, allowing for ageing, fading and so on.

They're the same just taken by a different camera I guess, in different lighting conditions.

Look same to me too. Online photos can't be trusted for colour balance one bit.

I guess the only settler for this would be to take a picture showing both versions together at the same time. They do look different with the one in question undoubtedly "greyer" to my eyes, but it could just be a faded version of the original. Is the colour inside the case the same as outside? The back of the dial trim ring the same as its front?
