I'd call it a Jones plug.

Similar plugs/sockets were used on 1950s/1960s mobile radios on the 'umbilical' between the boot-mounted radio and the dash-mount control-box.

From memory they were usually made by McMurdo.

Even though they are labelled Painton, they look very like Plessey 'Heavy Duty Multicon' connectors. I found them in an ITT Electronic Services catalogue called "The Electronics Book" probably from the 1970s.

The 8 pole plug has a Plessey part number 72/10/0801/03 (old part no. 310568)
The top entry cover is 72/10/0802/03 (old part no. 311753)
The end entry cover is 72/10/0803/03 (old part no. 311746)

The 8 pole socket has a Plessey part number 72/10/0851/03 (old part no. 310569)
The top entry cover is 72/10/0852/03 (old part no. 311795)
The end entry cover is 72/10/0853/03 (old part no. 311788)

Some seem to be available here:
