Replacing vinyl on a cabinet
Hi,
I'm currently refurbishing a Ferguson 34574 music-centre, which will eventually go to one of my daughter's friends. The current case is covered with a mixture of cheap veneer and even cheaper vinyl. All in that 1970s/80s wood effect. Since it's a bit tatty, I was tinking of stripping it off and replacing it with a different vinyl. I was thinking of using someting like this: In blue, perhaps. This vinyl is very thin compared to the original, which will make good preparation essential - are the any better alternatives. And, aside from the question of destroying the originality, does anyone have any advice? Best, Geoff |

Re: Replacing vinyl on a cabinet
Signmaking vinyl isn't really intended for this kind of job.
Have you considered car wrapping film? Ordinary Fablon etc 'sticky-backed plastic' isn't bad at all if carefully applied. I believe they also make a heavy-duty version intended for kitchen units etc. The most important point when using any vinyl covering is to avoid stretching it during application, as it will eventually shrink back, resulting in unsightly edges and joins. |

Thanks for the advice.
Fablon now seems to be a description as much as a brand - as in "Fablon-like vinyl covering". Anyway, I've ordered samples of car-wrapping vinyl, sign-making vinyl and genuine Fablon and I'll see how they compare. |

Hi Geoff, have you considered 'Rexine'.
Years past, this was the 'cotton backed' covering used for such tasks. In addition, it could have a textured surface. Googling suggests it is still available. Regards - Mike |

Fablon looks ok but does tend to shrink over time spoiling any corners. One tip is to paint underneath any area where shrinkage might occur with a similar colour paint. Better than seeing a light coloured wood!

Re: Replacing vinyl on a cabinet
I used something they called "leathercloth" in black to cover a Perdio Grosvenor - came out very well. I think the leathercloth is worth more than the radio now!
