Hi Simon,

Your set looks pretty good apart from the badge. It seems that all sets with green/white dials should have brass/chrome badges, but yours is aluminium. Is it possible it was changed at some point? The aluminium badge didn't come in until ~45,000, which I think is when the dial reverted to all-white print.

Of course, it's possible that you have an earlier chassis in a later cabinet.

It looks like a lovely example that will look like new when cleaned up. If you're stuck, you could always bring the set to me for an RF/IF line-up - Bristol is only an hour from here.

Thanks,

Mark

Many thanks for these details - all looks right for the serial number, as expected. Details have been added to the document, and you'll see them when I next get around to uploading it. I'll also add the set to the Hacker Radio Yahoo group in a moment...

I remember Snellings from my time in Norwich

It seems that this particular set could have been in stock for a while before sale - I say that because I've got a record of a later RP38A (14291) that was produced in the same month of 1970. Also, I've another set (12903) that has a capacitor with a dated 20/10/69, which is interesting. I've no idea how long that capacitor would have taken to get to Hacker via the various distributors, and how long it would have been sat in the factory before fitting, but perhaps a month or two?

Of course, these snippets of information are just one of the things that has made this exercise so interesting.

Thanks again,

Mark

- Serial number. 35430
- Handle type (single piece or the later 3-piece type). Single piece
- Grille type (sheet aluminium or extruded aluminium) Sheet aluminium
- Scale print (all white, or with some green) Some green

Hope this info is not too late, I have just found the forum.
RP38A Hunter VHF
S/N 51287
Extruded Aluminium
All White
DC Input Skt
Gold Elac Speaker
Tone control Chrome with black skirt

PSU VP408

Bought early 1970's probably 1973/74 and still working. Thats 40 years ago, were did it all go.

I worked in a small radio and TV shop in the 60's and 70's, we were Hacker and Roberts agents. It is a long time since I was fixing radios and TV's, reading the forum information that I had long forgotten brings back memories.

If anyone's still interested, I've just acquired my first Hacker - and very nice it is too. The only point of interest that I can see is that, with serial no. 49,199, it is the latest model, of those obtained, to have a sheet mesh aluminium grille. Here are the specs:

RP38A
49,199
Single Piece Handle
Mesh Grille
White and Green Scale
DC input socket
'Gold' Elac Speaker
Silver Tone Knobs

Hello all,

I am indeed still collecting data, and this thread has been open on a browser tab for many months now, reminding me that I really should update my records. Apologies for the delay

Allow me to reply to each of you:

Hi Bob, and a belated welcome to the forum!

Just one question about your set - are you sure about the handle? By this stage, the handles were the 3-piece variety (an extruded aluminium section with steel side sections).

Hi Tony,

Thank you for this, which does indeed narrow down the change of grille. However, I have a question about the scale, as by this stage the scale should only have white print. Oh, and what sort of "Hacker" badge does it have?

All the best,

Mark

Hi Mark

Green and white scale as stated. The badge is the slanted silver box in the left hand corner of the set. I may have to pick your brains about the lack of FM signal at a later date, when I get a power supply, if that's ok with you?

Cheers

OK - I wasn't really doubting you about the scale, it's just that it's unexpected at that serial number. I wonder if the scale was swapped at some stage of its life? Just a thought: did the serial number come from from the chassis itself, or from a sticker on the base of the set?

It sounds like you have the pressed aluminium badge, which does fit with the age of the set...

By all means, you are welcome to pick my brains - if you can find them

All the best,

Mark

Ah, I see...well, yes, modifications will skew the timelines; what's needed is a cluster of consecutive serial numbers around the relevant timelines: maybe I'll get a few more Hunters -for research purposes. . Oh btw, the serial no. is stamped on the chasis.

Cheers

Tony

Mine's a bit scruffy I'm afraid - it came to me free via freecycle and is on the increasingly long "to do" list.

RP38A
S/N 62836
3-piece handle
Extruded grille
White scale print
Has DC input socket
Gold Elac speaker
Tone control knobs missing

Thanks for those details - your late Hunter fm/am is not quite the latest, and would have had the original silver tone control knobs. Good luck sourcing replacements - I'm afraid I'm not aware of them being used on other sets, so I guess you'll have to find something that fits the shafts without looking too incongruous. Perhaps an add in the "wanted" section might help

All the best,

Mark

Thanks for the tips, Mark. Unfortunately the set was dropped by the previous owner, breaking open the cabinet which will need fixing before I do anything else with it. Thankfully the speaker and the circuit boards don't appear to have been damaged.

Thanks for that, Bob. The date is useful, and fits in with other data already collected. Funnily enough, we have 68206 on record - practically brothers
