Default White Trim on a Hacker Sovereign 2

I have completely dismantled a Hacker Sovereign 2 and have now got to the cabinet reassembly stage.

I'm about to glue the white plastic trim back. I didn't notice until it was off that it is a sort of P section profile and now I'm not sure which way it goes back.

The drawing attached shows what I mean. can someone with one of these enlighten me please!! Is it A or B?

Thanks

John

Hi John, Its "B" fits flush with top edge of case, the wrong way would leave it proud. I always try to take plenty of photos from different angels of chassis in case a wire drops off etc, maybe good to take photos of cases as well.

Thank you very much John. I didn't notice the profile until I was cleaning it and that was when I realised I didn't know which way it went back!

Lesson learned there!

John

What's the best glue to use for sticking this white trim back on. I've been using mitre bond but it goes off so quickly that I keep misaligning it.

If that is the best glue I'll press on unless someone's got a better idea?

Hi John

I've just finished a Helmsman rear panel rexine replacement. I used epoxy to glue the trim back on. I cut some short bits of timber with chamfered corners and clamped it gently. I was then able to tap it flush with another bit of flat timber. It set very well and the finished result was much better than I expected. I have made videos on the whole restoration but haven't got around to editing it. If it helps I could send you links to that section of my video.

Good luck as it's pretty scary.

I use PVA wood glue.

To get the trim off cleanly I use my hot air rework station (plus patience) and to replace it, I like the time I get to work with the trim when using PVA.

The downside of PVA is that it's best to have a box of mini clamps on hand.

The upside is that you won't have the stickiness and possible yellowing that you can get with epoxy and removing the trim later will be easy with a little bit of heat.

Graham's method will work well but if you are bothered about being able to work on the panel again at a later date (likely someone else by then), the epoxy will cause a problem.

Thanks for the replies chaps. I'll try the PVA first then. Haven't got all the clamps but plenty of clothes pegs. The bigger plastic ones fit OK so I'll have another go.

Cheers

John

Try to make sure the trim is clean, though. If you have trouble removing the old glue, use some Brasso wadding and then wash with soap and water after that. Dry thoroughly, obviously.

Be careful on the corners during clean-up to prevent tearing.

Good luck John. It's a tricky job but well worth the effort. PVA probably is the way to go but I wanted a stronger fix as the Helmsman has no padding so shouldn't need doing again.

I have to say that I wouldn't have thought either glue would have done what seems like a soft plastic. The mitre fix is OK but it's an impact adhesive so there's next to no time for repositioning/adjustment.

Thanks for the tips.

John
