Drilling out the rivets shouldn't be too damaging. You can either use a thin drill and hope to break up the metal "walls" from the inside, or use a fat drill to break up the head -- if you do this, it will only take a few turns; so either use a variable speed cordless drill, or just hold the drill bit in your hand and rotate it.

You can easily get nuts and bolts down to 2.5 and even 2 mm., and even smaller sizes from specialist suppliers; so holding it all back together when it's freed up won't be a problem.
