Re: Should that ITV converter be left in place?
All that was left of the left side batten. Have you ever seen such rubbishy work like this?

Re: Should that ITV converter be left in place?
I've got a few photos of the set with everything crammed in. Not exactly brilliant photo's but they show that space was tight.
The obvious space wasn't useable due to the recessed speaker baffle. Pete |

Re: Should that ITV converter be left in place?
Ferranti made an external two band tuner to convert all the companies' five channel superhet receivers including the one which is the subject of this discussion. The two band 13 channel tuner was housed in a small moulded cabinet which could be placed on top or along side the set. Pye offered something similar for the FV1 series models.
Information for the Ferranti two band tuner unit can be found on page 355 of the 1955/56 Radio and Television servicing book. DFWB. |

Re: Should that ITV converter be left in place?
I wonder if the converter positioning was at the request of the customer?
If the set usually lived somewhere without easy access to the sides, it's at least possible. |

Re: Should that ITV converter be left in place?
The deconversion of the Ferranti continues. Today, new wooden parts have been made and fitted.
When the chassis is refitted we can find out if it was possible to fit the Band conversion tuner on the side of the cabinet. Perhaps the customer did request the tuner to be fitted on the cabinet top. DFWB. Last edited by FERNSEH; 18th Apr 2015 at 10:17 pm. |

That is looking better, looking forward to seeing it refinished and looking like new.

Re: Should that ITV converter be left in place?
Hi Mark,
those new wooden parts will receive the usual industry standard brown paint. I hope to get this set up to a showroom standard. DFWB. |

Re: Should that ITV converter be left in place?
That was certainly a horrible scrappy conversion. I think you were absolutely right to restore it to standard.

Re: Should that ITV converter be left in place?
I also have three poorly cabinets to restore now the weather is warming up.
The chassis can then be restored during the winter months. I picked up a large can of brown satin finish paint from a boot sale recently, should be ideal for my sets. Mark |

Re: Should that ITV converter be left in place?
I remember that actual Ferranti. It was amongst the first old tellies I bought. It's webpage is still lurking on server though the page isn't linked in to the website (http://www.thevalvepage.com/tv/feranti/t1425/t1425.htm).
Never thought that anyone would bother with the cabinet, so pleased to see that it is getting the treatment. Other than the bodge for the tuner, I reckon the cabinet would have been quite nice before the Watery Skip ""Antique"" shop left it outside. TTFN, Jon |

Re: Should that ITV converter be left in place?
Yes Jon, that's the one.
Its new owner contacted me after my earlier post (you may recognise some of the photos I put up) and we confirmed it. After many years in my garage and yours I agree it's really nice to see it coming back to life. Looking forward to some photos of the completed set. Pete |

Re: Should that ITV converter be left in place?
The replaced woodwork needs the usual industry standard brown paint to finish off the restoration.
So it follows if the conversion was a rubbish job like this one it's best to return set back to it's original condition. Factory fitted conversions should remain even the one installed in some Bush TV22s. It doesn't look all that nice but those Bush converters are a beautiful engineering job. DFWB. When I restored the TV24 it was disconnected but left in place, I will do the same with the TV22 when I get round to restoring it. You would also have a dirty great hole in the back if you did decide to remove it! Mark |
