Default RTE1 252kHz.

I've just heard an announcement on RTE1 that the 252kHz LW transmitter will be off the air from 27th June to 8th July for repairs to the base of the masts.

This must be a good sign that the service will be continuing at least for the near future.

Good.
I have noticed that the signal was stronger of late.

I think I saw a story in the Irish Post a few weeks ago saying that RTÉ had caved in to political pressure and would continue with 252kHz indefinitely. The IP has been campaigning on this issue.

That is good news for LW, and with the recent OFCOM issue of new MW frequencies, AM radio should be with us for a while. Now it would be nice it if had a renaissance like vinyl has had!

They talk about switching off FM yet they still can't get rid of AM, which of course is a good thing. I see it sticking around for a good while longer, and after it's gone radio pirates will keep it alive.

Default RTE longwave

I was in the shack earlier today playing about with my VLF converter and heard an announcement that RTE1 on 252Kc/s will be off from the 27th of June for around7 days to allow for the replacement of the aeriel mast baseplate. So this makes me think that this TX is going to be around for a while longer yet otherwise they wouldn't spend money on a big project like that

I heard the announcement twice last night. Interestingly as well as the announcement at 6pm I also heard the power level drop down. Apparently its down to an agreement that they go from 300Kw's to 100Kw's at night to reduce interference to the Algerian service.

I feel sorry for the elderly Irish in our country, some of whom will be confused and unable to hear RTE Radio 1, and not have any clue why.

RTE would love to get rid of LW - they are 80 million Euros in debt - but the Irish public see it as a thank you to the thousands of ex Irish in the UK who sent their money back in the Devalera days.

RTE are trying to get coverage on DAB in some areas of the UK (Manchester is one) in order to kill LW off, but OFCOM want to be able to cut out anything that is going on in UK courts being carried on UK transmitters.

If it does come off it won't be RTE Radio 1 on DAB anyway, it will be a service tailored just for the UK, there's talk that some GAA commenteries won't be carried on it due to rights issues

Default RTE tempory off air

Hi guys have heard an announcement on RTE 252 KCs that this transmitter will be off till next weekend while they replace a mast Baseplate. This seems to bode well for the future I don't think they would spend money if they weren't going to keep it going what do you think??

Been listening to RTA Channel 3 while RTE is off in the evening

Surprisingly it's got a lot of western music on it after 2200, with some country and jazz for about three hours, with more mainstream western pop at other times.

I was expecting the usual Arab music on it !

I hope RTE turn the wick up a bit too. In the winter here in Bradford RTA3 really stomps all over RTE1 big time

I hope the signal is improved or better still retuned to 261Khz. Whilst RTE1 has been off its interesting to hear how strong that Chaine 3 signal is during the day and after dark.
