Default 14" BBC only Sobell TV set. Cabinet issues.

Follow up to my previous thread about this set.

Check this out. Fresh woodworm holes! Drastic action called for and it won't be simply wood filler this time to deal with the problem.

Hi Marc,
There was already woodworm holes in the side panel when I acquired the set and these were simply filled to hide them, but it seems the creatures are still active in the plywood. The rest of cabinet is worm free, or so I hope.
Anyway, I've a solution to the problem. Keep watching this tread.

The cabinet side has been removed, it came away without too much effort.
At the time of writing this I'm in the process of making a replacement.

The new side panel has been test fitted to the cabinet. Just a few adjustments to do and it will ready to clamp and glue into position.

Nightmare. I always douse any wormy cabinets with Sika woodworm killer even before they're stripped. I'm paranoid, maybe your worms have fledged into beetles and no longer like a modern warm house..and wont re-infest next year.

Does anyone know why tv and radio manufacturers used such dark brown lacquer on lovely figured walnut? Or does it turn darker with age? Many of my original 30's sets are so dark you can't see any grain, yet when stripped and repolished, they look more like the pics in the brochures.

Most likely to hide any manufacturing defects. The cabinet front and top of this Sobell was originally finished in the darkest lacquer I've ever seen. Stripping it off revealed a very nice wood veneer pattern. However, the sides were simply painted dark brown and that was done in order to keep production costs down. I believe the T143 was sold at a competitive price.
The repaired cabinet side panel is ready to receive that brown paint.
