Philips N1700 and N1702 recording compatibility
Hi All,
Does anyone know if recordings made on a Philips N1702 will play properly on an N1700? I ask as the N1702 has a slightly longer play time.. wonder if an N1700 can work with the longer play recorded signals, or not? Any help/experience appreciated! Cheers Rob |

Re: Philips N1700 and N1702 recording compatibility
A quick search of Wikipedia tells of different Philips formats and says later 1700's had heads marked 1702.

Re: Philips N1700 and N1702 recording compatibility
From what I can recall there's not many differences between the two.
The 1702 had an extra digit on the tape counter so it counted in thousands instead of hundreds. It had a slightly more attractive look about it - more silvery than grey and I think the timer functions had been expanded a little. Recording wise they should be the same. |

Re: Philips N1700 and N1702 recording compatibility
I have several examples of both models & they all play each others recordings fine as long as they're set up ok. They're both 'long play' models so the tape speed should be the same.

Re: Philips N1700 and N1702 recording compatibility
Hi Rob.
Renovated a few of these machines recently. The first N1700's had the words "2 hours long play" on the front, yet later models of the N1700 just said "AUTOMATIC" - as did the N1702. I believe this was down to the increasing length of tape available - (when the first N1700s came out in 1978 only 120min LP tapes existed- this increased to 180mins by the time the N1702 came out. I agree with KB Paul, that recordings should be interchangeable between all N1700 and N1702 models. I have even replaced N1700 video heads with N1702 ones. One thing to be careful though. Television magazine in the late 70s published a DIY guide to making a N1700 or N1702 record for even longer by slowing the key motors down. I have seen this on a couple of machines and clearly, if you have tapes recorded by these DIYers, then these won't playback on unmodified machines. Feel free to PM me if you need more info. Rob |

Re: Philips N1700 and N1702 recording compatibility
Many thanks to all who have replied with their experiences and info.
I have three of these machines and will probably whittle it down to two at some point, so needed to know about these compatibility matters. Again many thanks .. |
