Default Nordmende Fidelio 57 Dial cord

Hi all - I have a Nordmende Fidelio 57 with a dial cord which slips in one direction. It may just be a case of old-age. I'm not sure what would normally prevent the slipping - see the first picture. I did try shifting it along to adjust tension (probably not a good idea, I know).
Also what is the item in the next picture? It this to diffuse the dial illumination? Why is it also strung? The stringing was broken - It came out as shown. Does it perhaps play a role in relieving tension when tuning?

Hi Russell,

The item on the right picture is indeed a diffuser. The reason why it is strung is probably to keep it under tension so it stays flat and doesn't interfere with the tuning pointers. It is independent from the tuning strings.

Regarding the dial cord, some sets have a spring linked in to keep it under tension. Sometimes it helps to clean the wheels with solvent cleaner to prevent it from slipping.

Tuning capacitor spindles normally have around 3 turns of drive cord around them to give the right amount of friction.

Hi Russell,
Moral of the story: "when you're highly strung, you need something to relieve the tension!"

I recently bought some violin-bow rosin and applied it to a (new) synthetic drive-cord to increase the friction.
