Default Dansette Oxford

Now the proud owner of a Dansette Oxford which is now working fine apart for a temporary clip for the Acos Cartridge. It does appear that this model is almost identical to a Tonesta. Now got me wondering who were Tonesta? Someone has made a comment on one thread that maybe a catalogue brand? I guess they were manufactured at Stanmore?

I date this model as 1968 with the Garrard deck so think still a Dansette BUT the later ones had the later plastic BSR decks that might well be different.

I can't say whether or not Mally is right but IMHO, the Rank "Dansettes" which I've seen were superior to the ones they made when they were an independent company

This photo of the label on the back of the machine may throw some light on whether a Rank or Dansette. From what I remember it's an identical label as seen on the reverse of the Dansette Popular Mk3. I think Rank put their distinctive man with gong as have on my 70s bedside Dansette Clock/radio. Agree Rank made a better class of player.

This is one of the last of the Dansettes made by the original company at Honeypot Lane, Stanmore. I agree the dating as 1968. Edward

Thanks Edward. Wonder if the factory building in Honeypot Lane is still standing? The Old Street building is still there as went to look some years back.

In my view, it is a myth that the Rank Dansette models were superior to the original Dansettes. The Regina, reviewed in The Gramophone in early 1968, received an excellent write up, and certainly the HiFi and Imperial models were better than any subsequent Rank players.

I completely agree. The RBM units were badged as Bush, Murphy and Dansette. The 1968/70 valve players were at best a simple UCL82/UY85 job.

I think the last model produced at Honeypot Lane, was the Trent,a confusing beast of a portable, stereo.

Had one of those a few years back and yes strange animal. Think they had a few others named after rivers, Severn was another but a mono box player.

AWC (Alex) very kindly sent me an Acos clip to replace the broken one. Slight difference in design, so have honed down sides as the original wider and also sets the cartridge slightly further back in the head. Works A1 fine and setting the cartridge in it's new position doesn't seem to affect performance in any way.

That looks to have quite an angle on it, but if it plays OK then fine, er, I noticed the transit screws are not fully down.

Not down at all. Is that an early photo Ekcoman?

The transits screws not released as was stored away. This is how it looks now. The angle is correct with the cart holder as can only fit it one way. It just sits slightly back in the head. I could possibly drill a hole in the carrier and move it forward half an inch as originally designed but don't think necessary as appears to play fine.
