Default Arreton Manor radio museum, Isle of Wight

As the title says, does anyone recall actually visiting this. I do, it was when Arreton manor was open to the public in the 1990s

From what I remember, there was a wooden structure with steps, leading up to the inside. Once inside you were greeted with an amazing sight, of about as many radio's as you could possibly get in there, early 1920s sets all complete with their valves, and suitcase type record players too, it sure was some collection from all era's. There was also some ex-BBC broadcasting equipment in there to, and some very large valves.

My question is, does anybody know what happened to it all, and were did it all go when the manor was finally closed to the public? (I don't know what year it closed to public viewings) any info would be welcomed and interesting to know.
Thank you, Paul.

Yes Douglas Byrne-very well known although I never met him. The Museum finally closed around 2005? It's been mentioned on here before Paul and in various mags/on-line etc. Others will know more but sadly, it was a good example of what can go wrong without future planning for handover and continuance. I suppose it just gets too much for an ageing individual to struggle with. I believe that some of the collection fell into decay but a lot was rescued by Forum/BVWS members. The Gerry Wells Museum in South London may have indirectly benefited from that experience as they seem to have built in a very sound structure and forward plan for their own organisation!

I went there years ago but the gear was very poorly stored in a damp building which did it no favours I am afraid.

I remember going there, but it must have been in the 1970's. I remember very little except that I thought it a bit untidy.

I went there in the early 80's. I think I was impressed with it but unfortunately I remember very little.

I remember sometime ago seeing some pictures of various radio and television receivers stacked in a wartime bunker with some stuff in an open shed behind the museum that was in Puckpool park?

That's a good link there David and takes me back to what I'd forgotten I knew Still a sad story though! There is at least one magazine article I can recall-possibly in Radio Bygones but I'm not sure!
