Tooth paste will polish glass, needs a power tool ie. Dremel, unless you like being bored stiff.

I wouldn't have believed it either but the dent was similar to what you would get when hitting the centre of a plank with the edge of another in a glancing way. It was not deep but visually obvious. It took lots of polishing out, but I was doing it manually as I tend to be careful with a windscreen. It may obviously have been a strange shaped chip, or even massive wear over a short length, but without high magnification it didn't appear so! I presumed at the time that as glass is a supercooled liquid it has strange behaviour in some circumstances, but I know little about it. Obviously a sharp point impact would have instantly shattered it but this was a spread out blow.

Tooth paste is also excellent for restoring dull plastic car headlights !

Re #14, I had a similar experience with a sunglasses lens that had a bad scratch right in the middle: I did get rid of the scratch, but the optical distortion was too objectionable. I suppose that, by removing the plastic, I had in effect made a bifocal lens of the wrong power for that eye.

Hi

I read somewhere that 0000 grade wire wool can be used to remove light scratches from car windscreens, never tried it.

As far as stress in the screen, I would have thought a polished out scratch would present less stress than the original sharply defined scratch, assuming you don't go deeper than the original scratch.

On a lark, you might try a nonabrasive automotive wax compound. My eye glasses provider swears by it for scratches in reading glasses. just apply and wipe off.
Worst case, you gave not damaged the screen, and can remove with solvent.
