Default DX TV 1st viewing for 2017

Hi all,
Yesterday while working in the garden i left my small b/w TV running in my shed tuned to 49Mc/s (E2). At the time of sw on the band was dead, but at 16.50 UTC I became aware of ssb radio. After careful tuning and aerial alignment, I was rewarded with a weak E2 (R1) pic & a strong pic on E4 (62Mc/s) both with fast fade. I suspect Jordan on E4 & Ukraine on E2, but did not see any logo's. Opening lasted till 17.20 UTC then complete fade out. Did any one else see this opening.
Kind regards Derrick.
PS. Aerial pointing east.

Thanks for the tip-off Derrick. I've been listening out on R1 vision carrier 49.75 Mc/s for quite some time now (at usually about 8 AM in the morning) but have not heard anything. But there again DXing is rather like I suspect fishing is - not much activity for a long time then you get a big one!

Sounds good chaps, I used to do quite a bit of DXing when in Hertfordshire but in a low area, since moving to Cornwall I have got the bug back for vintage telly and have been thinking about what is left on VHF. Being high up on the moors we may be in a better position. Will have to get some kit together. Will keep an eye on the posts.

At about 6 pm BST (5 pm GMT) on the 22nd I heard weak R1 and briefly R2 video - neither strong enough to give a picture. Also there was Morse and SSB in the 50 Mc/s radio-amateur band. It's the first DX I have heard in many a month.

I'm in Harwich on the coast, what kind of old TV do I need to do some DXing? I have an old colour portable plus a 20 inch colour TV out in my garage workspace, both are in good working order.

Band 2 was also affected by Sporadic E from the Middle East and Eastern EU. Been a while in coming this year.

Records,

Do the sets have VHF tuning capability? (Later colour sets sold in this country often came with VHF capability. This may not be mentioned much, as the UK did not use VHF for colour transmissions (note: the Irish Republic did). Some Grundigs were multi-standard as well...

Just to be clear: here I'm talking about DX for the remaining few Analogue TV transmissions.

JUST TO UPDATE THINGS
22/05 /17 ON 49M/cs at 20;18 utc locked pic on R1 with good contrast at times
looked like a WW1 film this ended at 21;30 their time with a large digtial clock. There was also a small opening on the 23/05 at 11.45 again R1

Hi records could you please let us know the make and Mod No's of your tvs this mightg help in finding if set could ber used for dxing.
I am using a smal 5ins BW Pansonic withe built in radio and cassett , My aerial is a band one H type mounted horizontal and is also rotatable but left faceing east
As steve CG says in the last post sets need to be 625 line with a band one tuner
a dual 405/625 set could be used but the switching wouldhave to modified the keep the band one tuner in circuit on 625 lines. Steve mentions the grundig range
also some of the phillips had tuner that would tune through band 1, a clue might be the letters E1-4 in the menu or Vl. Going back to the aerial this could be made
from just coax cable the inner being pulled out of the screening cut to the correct lengh to tune to band one , mounted on a piece of wood and placed in loft. This type of analogue dx will soon be gone for good as there are only a few countries left using this type most have coverted to digital.
regards Derrick

30th of May, at approx. 7PM BST (6 PM GMT):

R1 video carriers ( -ve offset both) beating together to give an approx. 400 c/s tone. Just about strong enough for line sync to be seen but not strong enough for a picture.

R1 (0 and -ve offset), Can't see any pictures due to Radio Amateur activity on 50 Mc/s.

Records,

Make an aerial as 1955APREN advised (anything more complicated could just be a waste of time and money as these Analogue Transmissions will surely cease soon).

Investigate your 14 inch portable (I don't know the model you describe) for a way of tuning between European TV channels 2 to 4 ( E2 to E4 to give them their more formal titles). Channel R1 is just above channel E2 and Channel R2 is between E3 and E4.

Orient the aerial so that it mounted horizontally and points East (that is so that the wire of the aerial will actually lie on a North to South line) as a starter.

Band 1 TV has been in here most of the afternoon so I havwe included some screenshots of my RTL SDR used with SDR V 2.3.

I have a band 1 dipole and the feed is spit one to SDR other to TV as I type Russia 1 dominating.
The best thing about SDR's for monitoring Carriers you can ID them just by the was they look an Example 5 Kanal form Sovetsk is the unstable TX carriers wobbles around a lot with a severe wobble now and again.

First picture is of Russia 1 carrier 49.757 second is 4 T carriers on 49.739/49.740/49.750/49.757.

Hi Record
Your samsung tv as the same remote control as my main tv ( I like crt sets)I think it should have a VHF tuner fitted like mine, to find out sw tv on then press
No 1 on the remote control . The menu button should the be selected and with the up/ down buttons select the tuner mode ( the one with sat dish picture) then the ok button, then select the manual tune , then the search button, at the point
the set should start shreaching through the bands if it starts around 45M/cs it as a vhf tuner fitted and should be ok for Dxing. Note it will search quick but you should be able stop it at the correct point. You can set the different Pr No,s to the
frequency required. As suggestion it might be good to set Pr1 to 49Mc/s , pr2 to 51Mc/s, Pr3 to 55Mc/s Pr4 to 59Mc/s, and pr 5 to 62Mc/s. remember to press the store button after each adjustment.
Aerial you will need to make a aerial to tune to this band could results have been seen with just a home made dipole mounted horizontal in the east west plane.
Your phillips tv should all so be ok sorry i do not any information on this set.
I now notice that while typing SteveCg &radioredcat have passed on some information about today opening, I only caught the last part on this at 19:20 utc I think that a CH4 station possible Jordan but signals faded after this time
Regards Derrick

2nd of June, About 3PM BST (2PM GMT):

R1 (0 and -ve offset) - strong enough for picture and scanner receiver sound. I would guess Russian or Ukranian? speech - it agreed with the picture content.
Also some R2, much weaker.

Nothing today (yet), 3rd of June.
