Default STC V.C.21 Export to where?

I came accross this in my service information and wondered which market this chassis was designed for?
Although it doesn't say on the cover page the sound is fm and the sound intercarrier is 5.5 MHz.

Enjoy

France used different sound spacing but they were of course on 819 lines. We used to be able to lock two pictures side by side but no sound.

Sounds like it was designed for most of Western Europe seeing it covers VHF & UHF 625-line System B/G (which uses 5.5Mc/s intercarrier sound).

Most fascinating! I note the line output valve is a PL500, not a PL36 as used in UK produced versions!

Cheers,
Brian

Thanks Brian I'm guessing not France though I thought as per Peters post they used 819 lines. Did we really have sales in Europe in the 1960's ? I thought those markets were pretty closed to Uk exports.

Enjoy

The UK was a big exporter in the 60's of many types of goods. The list is long but OT for this forum. Ekco, Pye, STC (KB) and RBM were well known exporters of Brown goods, as were others.

Australia can be ruled out, STC made their own T.V.s in Sydney and were nothing like the British sets. I suggest perhaps the Middle East might be a possibility. Also Hong Kong imported lots of brown goods from the U/K up untill the place was back under the control of China.

It makes no mention of "export" sound offset.

Other countries that used 6MHz were:
Ireland, Southern Africa, Macau, Hong Kong and Falkland Islands.

I think Ireland used both UHF and VHF.

Hi Peter as said in the original post the sound intercarrier is 5.5Mhz. I had a quick flip through there is no mention of the type of aerial connector other than its 300 ohms I will try to upload some more pages.
Enjoy!

Oops! Sorry, It sounds like it could have come from just about any continental European country then.

I believe the Germans (used to) use 300Ω balanced feeders. I used to have a Teleton portable with them on but I think it also had Belling-Lee sockets (or adaptors?) There was a little compartment in the back for baluns etc..

STC sets were sold in Norway. Norway had close ties to the UK after the war and did much trade with the UK. This changed slowly and by the 80's Germany was by far the biggest trading partner.

I have only (except for one mono set) experience with post 1974 STC colour sets. Most STC sets came from Germany, more than 95%. I've see only a few sets from the UK. But I think STC sold more UK sets in the 60's.

In the 60's people started to get doubts about the quality of UK products.

STC was part of the American ITT conglomerate which also included a number of German and other European subsidiaries e.g Schaub, Lorenz, Graetz.

Various UK market KB radios of the '50s and '60s were direct copies of Schaub Lorenz designs so it is clear that there was at least some collaboration between ITT's various European subsidiaries. The later CVC5 colour TV appears to be a largely German design.

It's possible that this telly chassis was a collaborative design between STC in the UK and an associated European company, hence the use of a different line output valve from that used in STC / KB's UK market sets.
