Shirley Laboratories Ltd. Would appreciate any info on this company. Next to nothing on the net about them.

Hi -
The only internet-based reference I could find was a third-party website showing "00537752" as a 'company number' associated with that specific name - however, Companies House has no records available for either ... sorry
Best wishes
Guy

Companies House will have the information but it will have been archived. You can still buy all the data they have for c.£20, which will be supplied on a DVD. Just email them and they will do the rest

If you email the London Gazette they will also do a search for you FOC. Their website has a search function you can try, but I often find they can dig up more than I can find myself

If you know where the company was based then the local newspaper will also provide a useful resource. I have found them most helpful if you ask nicely

Interesting coincidence?

Nice pictures, anyway.

Maybe the seller may know a little more?

Shirley Laboratories shows up in the early 1960s Hi Fi Year Books with products in the amplifier, radio tuner and tape deck amplifier and mixer sections. A footnote in the last-mentioned section advises that mixer units with up to up to 36 inputs were available to order. So one suspects that it was also in the professional and/or public address business as well as offering domestic products.

In the 1962 HFYB, the introductory section on radio tuners was written by Arthur Wayne of Shirley Laboratories; he might have been something of an expert on the subject. The company address was given as 3 Prospect Place, Worthing, Sussex.

Cheers,

Bit of a bargain, I reckon. Certainly a well built bit of kit if you've got the houseroom. Have fun!

The big amp looks very much like the TWA1515 (number from memory) that was published as a long running construction project in HiFi news. It could also be bought ready built. One of these, definitely homemade, was donated to my school in the late 70's. It was stripped for parts which eventually revealed the cause of it's failure: there was a big brown flash mark under the chassis where some kind of HT short had occured.

As noted in the article Arthur Wayne was also a concert pianist. The company seems to have faded away as transistors took hold.

He was also a reviewer for HiFi news and his reviews of Heathkit equipment make interesting reading.

Regards,

Paul
