Default AVO Universal Measuring Bridge - Type 1

Hi,

Does anyone have any knowledge of these instruments? It's the one that is rather like a suitcase with a removable lid covering the front. Are they reliable, are there any common faults and what might need replacing, if anything?

TIA, Colin.

I have one that I restored some time ago. If I recall correctly, I had to replace some capacitors, otherwise it works fairly well.

Hi Karl,
Yes, I did look at that. I couldn't fine a manual or a circuit diagram anywhere else. I think I will have to PM Colin Armstrong to get a copy of his scan.
Were the capacitors you replaced non-critical or were they the ones used as standards? I would hope that they weren't the standards; I imagine they could be pure "unobtainium".
Colin.

If no-one has a scanned manual, I have one and could scan it.

Hi Colin, they are a very useful bridge and easy to use. A little cleaning, lub of the slide wire is sometimes needed, but be gentle.

Avo Universal Measuring Bridge Type 1. Suitcase style.
The complete manual is just too large to post on this Forum. I attach an extract which gives the key information. If you want the full manual, it will have to be sent by email.

Faults. Nothing out of the ordinary, but be careful of the main potentiometer, a 12" long horizontal tube wound with resistance wire, forming a slide wire. I had to rewind mine as it had worn and fractured in the centre of the track.
I have a spare bobbin of suitable resistance wire if you have to rewind.

No, they weren't the standards, it was the more common or garden others that I swapped
