Re: Sharp GF525 speaker query
How do you know that it needs new speakers? They rarely fail.
It is ususally more liable to be an amplifier problem. I think this unit has 2 x 6.5" units each with a co-axial tweeter. They are liable to be Far-Eastern OEM types.

Re: Sharp GF525 speaker query
The first thing to do is to swop the speakers over to see if the problem is with the speakers or the radio.

Re: Sharp GF525 speaker query
Station X
This is a Boom Box and the unit will have to be opened up to swop the internal speaker wiring. Phil 177 Is the problem the same when it's in both Radio Mode & Cassette playback ?

Re: Sharp GF525 speaker query
Phil 177 - Does the unit have a headphone socket?
If so, then plug a pair of headphones in to see if both stereo outputs work on headphones. If one output is distorted and quiet even on phones, then it isn't a speaker fault. |

Re: Sharp GF525 speaker query
Thanks everyone I do think have any experience repairing these but I'll have a go at troubleshooting it. So let me get this right if headphones work on both sides the amp is ok? Cheers Phil.

Re: Sharp GF525 speaker query
Yes, Phil. If this is the case, the trouble could be in the headphone socket, which incorporates switches to cut out the speakers when a jack plug is inserted, or, less likely in my opinion, it could be a faulty speaker. These are easily checked with a multimeter, set to a low ohms rangepreferably an analogue one, connected across the speaker terminals. A reading of either 4 or 8 ohms (approximately) should be obtained, together with a 'click' in the speaker as the test probes are applied. This must be done withe the unit switched off. On the other hand, if the sound from one channel is weak and/or distorted when headphones are used, the amplifier is faulty.
