Part used in R&S UPSF video test set
I am baffled.
Found the following part, three of but look identical, in the R&S UPSF Video Noise Meter. Not even that certain of where in the circuit it appears, just coax cabled to other boards. There are two wires going in the bottom to a glass tube, evidently vacuum due to heat seal at top. Then whatever is inside has the three side wires attached, with the red, green and white beads, or seals. What is it? What does it do? Answers on a postcard please to....... No circuits around to look at. |

They're mercury relays, operated by the heat from a small lamp at one end.

Mercury relays!!!!!
I don't think I would ever have come up with that one. So the next question is - why? What do they do that an ordinary gold contact relay can't do? Thanks for the response, but how did you know what they were? |

I've no idea what the advantages are, one of our design oriented members may know, but I have come across them before. A recent thread about a Shaub tape recorder mentions them too I believe.
