Trio TS-830S Display problem - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

I'm trying to get the display on a TS-830S going.

I've cleaned all the connectors and sockets. The 12 volt lines are OK.

I've got 5 volts on D1 but only 1.5 volts on pin 16 of Q6.

Can't get at C7 without removing the counter unit board from the chassis, and not sure how to do that.

Can anyone with experience of the radio help please?

Don't know whether you're aware of the mods.dk website.

Given how many Trio/Kenwood TS830s were sold over many years and has a good reputation for reliability, with the passage of time, certain faults have manifested themselves.

the Mods.DK site has quite a list of faults and modifications, including inevitably the display problem.

Membership is free, but has limitations - it particular, you can only view one item per day.

I owned an 830 from new, from the mid-1980s until I sold it about five years ago as I'd not been active on air for maybe fifteen years. I used it little, especially on transmit, though I did get the 'Worked All Continents Award' on it. (Indonesia, Brazil, Oz, Africa, Japan etc). In all the years that I had it, it never skipped a beat. The receiver was excellent, and the AT230 separate ATU would tune just anything.

I think most display problems are cured by cleaning the connectors and sockets, but you've already done that. Also, occasionally cured by rectifying 'dry' joints.

Thank you very much David for the info.

This 830s is perfectly usable, with the analogue read out and crystal calibrator, but I'd like to get the display going if possible.

The Yahoo group has been helpful
