Re: Server Busy
Between about 17.30 and 18.30 today the website was running very, very slowly. No actual 'Server Busy' message, just extremely slow response, with some blank screens while claiming 'done'.
Other website were running fine, and everything is back to normal now. Alan |

Re: Server Busy
On 7th. Jan., I experienced an unusually very slow response for most of the afternoon and evening. Other popular WebSites - such as BBC News - were running at nornal speed.

Re: Server Busy
I've checked by a few times this afternoon and evening and not noticed any problems. It would be worth mentioning which ISP you are using when reporting apparent problems to show if there is a pattern. I'm using Zen Internet.

Re: Server Busy
There were issues yesterday at the London Internet Exchange (LINX) which affected browsing with many ISPs. My O2 broadband had this problem, though funnily I only noticed after I had finished browsing this forum. See http://beusergroup.co.uk/ - it seems to have been cured now, but no updates there yet.

Re: Server Busy
I've experienced quite a few server timeouts during the last half hour. The rest of the net seems fine.

Re: Server Busy
I've dropped an email to the hosting company to see if they are aware of anything. They will no doubt take a quick look at the server logs etc to see if that shows anything.

Re: Server Busy
I have asked a few times before for traceroutes when there is general slowness as it is probably not the server, and could be anywhere on route. A traceroute will show exactly where things are going slow.
If it's a problem with the server we are more likely to get server busy messages from the forum software as the threshold for that is deliberately set fairly low to allow the sites that bring in the money to have priority. |

Re: Server Busy
Normally a clue that the server itself is a bit slow is the odd email from the vBulletin forum software saying "Error - mySQL server has gone away". I've had none of those today (Wednesday).

Re: Server Busy
The forum was seriously sick between about 10:30 and 10:50 today - very slow, regular timeouts, reset connections etc. It's still very sluggish.

Re: Server Busy
I can't see anything untoward now. Server load is about 0.6 which is fairly typical.
We were sending out a load of emails to existing customers via two websites earlier (about 25,000 of them) which may well have affected performance, but this is done twice a week on average so there is no reason why today's session would cause any more problems than previous times. |

Re: Server Busy
Everything seems back to normal now.
The site performance between 10:30 and 11:00 was the worst I've ever known it without the server being actually down or the forum closed. At a guess I would speculate that the mailshots were causing an I/O bottleneck which was stopping mySQL working properly. The total CPU load may have been quite low. If this is the case, it would affect the commercial sites on the server as well as this forum. |
