Default Design of cassettes

Hi all,

Using my VCR yesterday I was thinking about this.
Audio cassettes were made in many designs and colours, as long as the important dimensions met the standard. VHS cassettes almost all look the same. They are black, they have essentially the same pattern in the plastic (to aid gripping with the hand?) the text 'Insert this side into recorder. Do not touch tape inside' The VHS logo. Et cetera.

How was these two formats licensed by the company that invented them? (Philips and JVC). Seems that VHS was strictly regulated. I have seen coloured VHS shells but they are very rare in comparison with the black ones.

Just curious

Maybe there was less commercial motivation? The VHS cassette gets sucked inside the machine, never to be seen again until ejected when it is quickly put back in its case... not for al machines, but the vast majority.

I suppose a clear shell, so popular with audio cassettes from the mid-1980s, is out of the question because the VHS system uses optical end sensors.
