Ekco SRG 451 stylus?
Hi all,
Got an Ekco SRG 451, but no idea what stylus it takes. Also can't find any info about this stereogram on the internet. Any help appreciated! Thanks, Katie |

Re: Ekco SRG 451 stylus?
The pickup cartridge fitted may not be the original one. Even if it is, it may need to be replaced anyway -- some mono cartridges will ruin stereo records (though your machine's model number begins with an S, so sounds like it is stereo anyway) and cartridges using a Rochelle salt crystal tend to die of old age.
Can you post a picture of the underside of the tonearm showing the pickup cartridge? Use the "flower" function on your camera, it is especially for close-up work. If you can see any writing on it, so much the better. (Mods -- how about making a sticky on this subject? If needed, PM me and I'll write it.)

Re: Ekco SRG 451 stylus?
This would have had a Sonotone 9TA cartridge originally. Does it look like this? http://www.gspaudio-community.active...made-in-uk.jpg
If so, the "465S" stylus here (£8 all inclusive) would do: https://shop.mantra-audio.co.uk/acat...ne_stylus.html Fortunately, there is a good chance it might still work (because it's a ceramic, not crystal one), and if it does, it is an excellent performer for both mono and stereo records. Nick. EDIT: Our posts crossed. Yours is indeed a Sonotone 9TA! |

Oh PS, I have a spare stylus already that is labelled Sonotone 9TA HC D/D, it looks the same, is it? Thanks.

Re: Ekco SRG 451 stylus?
Sounds perfect, though it's not unheard of for people to have put an old stylus back in the box a new one came in, presumably for use as a "rainy day" spare.
"HC" = High Compliance, i.e. incorporating a more flexible rubbery "hinge". An upgrade over the non-HC models. "D/D" = a diamond tip on each side, usually both for microgroove ("modern" 33 and 45 rpm) records, as opposed to old, shellac 78s. The one from Mantra Audio has one tip for microgrooves, the other for 78s. Nick. |

Re: Ekco SRG 451 stylus?
You can buy an excellent 4-page service sheet (= circuit diagram plus other basic service info), for £1.99 here: http://www.service-data.com/product.php/1399/2170
It's a fairly ordinary mid-1960s transistorised stereo radiogram, with FM radio and a BSR UA15 autochanger. |

It's one I bought online recently for my other record player, I bought a couple so hopefully it should be ok. Thanks so much for your help chaps.

Re: Ekco SRG 451 stylus?
That cartridge is a Sonotone 9TA, which uses an artificial ceramic element, so it should be fine with just a new stylus. 9TA HC is the later version of the stylus that fits a 9TA, and has slightly higher compliance.
If testing an unknown spare stylus, don't use a valuable record in case it is faulty and damages the record.

Re: Ekco SRG 451 stylus?
Hm, it didn't sound great at all. I really shouldn't have bought it! Anyway I've stuck it on ebay now as I know I'm never going to get round to fixing it!

Re: Ekco SRG 451 stylus?
It should sound very good really, partly beacuse of its big cabinet.
Presumably, the radio sounded wonderful but the record player awful? If you change your mind and want help fixing it, you know where to come. N. |

Re: Ekco SRG 451 stylus?
The radio had no sound at all! It's a shame as it's so pretty, I'd keep it but you fellas & ladies already helped me fix a Dynatron which I'm never parting with - no room for two!

Re: Ekco SRG 451 stylus?
The "no radio" symptoms would probably be caused by the AF115 and AF116 germanium transistors it uses. Sorry, going way off topic now though
