Default A few memories.

Hi folks.

Not really relevant to anything in particular but here are a few pictures of my father and the radio/TV shop he worked for way back in the fifties, he's the guy on the right by the way, maybe some clever person can date them more accurately from the models on display.

Greg.

Fantastic pictures! Bush TV80, KB PVP20 1958. The ancient High St looks amazing. The television shop almost appears to be an invasion. Love those pictures! Love the 'Florence Viceroy' drip feed oil heater, 2nd pic bottom right. John.

Thanks for posting I love to see the old shop displays.

There's a Bush VHF90 bottom of pic 2 so 1956?

Nice!

My parents had one of the Morphy Richards hairdriers like the one on the display-board in picture #2.

It ran very hot! and the plastic grille in the outlet soon crumbled, along with the white plastic nozzle-part itself going yellow.

I would say late 1958 based on the Ferguson record player. i just love those white coats. That says "technical"!

A very common fault was the 0.5uF motor run capacitor going short circuit. I changed many of them when I was an apprentice. Those were the days - when it was economical to repair hair driers, irons and toasters.

Cut my teeth on irons and toasters, as you say they were an economical proposition then, anyway,, those pictures, in 58 I was seven years old and the memory of that shop is indelibly etched in my mind, got taken there probably on Saturdays to get me out of moms way for a while, and to keep me occupied I was given some tools to butcher even older tv carcasses, probably some good stuff was wrecked at my hands!, they were very happy times indeed and I knew then I wanted to be in the trade.
the guy demonstrating the tv was john smith, probably the original one who I remember as being a really fun person, dad had no real interest in the trade other than it was a job at the time and he went on to other things, quick! Somebody, invent a time machine, I wanna go back!!.

I used white shop coats with my name in red on the pocket. I like the EKCO on the guys pocket. Looked very smart back then and customers appreciated it. It raised the 'tone' of the business as did a smart clean shop as in your pictures.

There were plenty of dumps that stank where the guy wore a filthy jumper covered in cigarette burns and ash... Not a place where you would take your immaculate Bush TV125U.

What wonderful pictures! You can tell it's a proper shop as they have pegboard on the walls. Certainly the sort of place you could rely on for attentive service and friendly advice. It may be a small shop but everything about it exudes a quiet sense of pride.

It looks like a set (maybe a Bush) had recently been sold as there is a vacant shelf in the window display.

Yes indeed, oh for a time machine. It all looks so inviting....

Hi

In pic2, and above the Ferguson record player, there looks to be a Bush DAC70 which I think first came out in 1958. Great pics.

Regards
Symon.

Hi Greg,

Oh wow ! I want to go there please.
I certainly would guess 1958 judging by the various models on display.
I wonder if Dr Who could give me a lift back there ?

Thanks for posting those fabulous photos

Cheers,
Marc.

Absolutely great photos Greg. I tend to print off anything like this off! It's amazing how many of them are striking images in their own right. apart from the evocative memories they must invoke and the historical value!

Hi
Great pictures - taken almost the same time as the photos of my Dad's shop I posted some months ago. Wonder if they ever met at the big Earls Court shows?

Super photos!

The 'Bush' sign over the display in Photo 3 (and you can just see a similar logo in Photo 1 at the top of the window) displays a rather futuristic font, almost early 1970's! Though this isn't consistent with everything else I admit.

I still have one of those hair driers. About its only use these days is for gently warming Araldite to cure it quicker. Build-up of fluff used to make the element glow, easily cured by cleaning it. Also useful where cold air is needed, as most modern ones only blow hot.

I thought that, but rather than being that 'lumpy' computer font I think it's the drop shadow on the standard caps font making it look like that!
