HMV Stereomaster radiogram 2412
Hi all,
This is my first post so apologies in advance if I make some terrible rookie mistake. My wife's father left her a stereo master radiogram 2412 which had been in storage for a long time. We switched it on and the radio seemed to work a bit but the frequency kept changing and ther was a lot of crackle and hum. I watched a YouTube video recommending replacement of some capacitors On the amp board, which I followed, but now there appears to be no power at all running to the unit. The turntable doesn't even turn (which it did before). Does anyone have any thoughts on why the power might have disappeared? Could it be as a result of me having changed some capacitors? Any help would be really gratefully received. It's the only thing she really has to remember her dad by and I'm desperate to get it working again. Thanks in advance. Joe |

You need to find faults methodically. You won't get anywhere changing random capacitors because you saw some herbert doing it on YouTube, and you're likely to introduce new faults which is what appears to have happened.
Your best bet is probably to find someone local to you who can restore it properly. |

Rookie error identified. The live wire had come loose in the plug!
I've got the turntable working and the crackle and hum is now sorted too. The problem which remains is that the radio tuning receives a channel well enough but then picks up another signal for a few seconds before returning to the intended channel. Any ideas on this? Thanks for being patient with me! Joe |

Is there a button marked AFC? Does it make any difference when in or out?
Radios of this era can struggle with crowded FM bands. |

AFC means Automatic Frequency Control and when switched in it will "lock" you on to you chosen station far better.

Re: HMV Stereomaster radiogram 2412
Hi there.
Thanks for your replies. It does have an AFC switch which does, indeed, improve reception. However, whilst it will lock into a frequency for a few minutes, it then fades away as though an invisible hand is twisting the dial! Is this common and, if so, fixable? Thanks. Joe |
