Default Any EMI fans know 'em? 'Capitol' speakers - unique styling

Recognise these rather unusual speakers? EMI enthusiasts??

They are in pleasantly shaped cabs; backs rounded into a V, to sit in a corner. Branded "EMI Hayes Middlesex", having large eliptical speakers in them which have EMI stamped on the basket.

Model is "Capitol" (sic). 4 Pics attached to enjoy... Any ideas welcome!

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave, These speakers were originally supplied with the Capital RS101 Stereo record player:-

One of the first stereo players, I have a pair of these speakers, wish I'd kept the player now!....

Regards, Mick.

just for info,
the speaker cloth is the same as that on the dynatron mazurka I'm sat next to, which would date at 1967 +- a bit. I think it has the same emi greenish grey eliptical drivers as well but its no minor matter to check
cheers

I think there was at least one later Dynatron player with the Mazurka name, but the one with this pattern of speaker cloth dates back to around 1960 at least. I've a couple of them here, one complete and one not: the Garrard Lab 'A' was the better deck option on those, and long gone from the market by '67. As Mick says, the speakers would have accompanied one of Capitol's early stereo record players: here's a scan from the 1959 Radio Show catalogue.

Regards,
Paul

Thanks all for the info and scans... legs gone, but those are they alright!

FWIW, the big EMI eliptical drives had corroded greenish grey... but they still sound awesome. (Just played this early 70's theme through 'em and sounds lurverley - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIU4ClxXXck )
