Help! Can any of you buffs identify this amplifier?
I have a chance of this little old amplifier, but before I commit I would like to try and find out just what exactly it is

Re: Help! Can any of you buffs identify this amplifier?
Regret, I've no idea. A home-brew mono amp from the early to mid 1950s? They look like octal valve holders, so maybe a 6V6 Push Pull amp? I recognise the Bulgin pointer knobs and the control plates behind them, very much of the period. What would you intend to do with it?

It could be from a factory or school. The transformer arrangements look a bit odd.

Much modified or a bitsa,, control escutcheons are of the type used by Grampian as is the 3 pin input socket and what looks like a disused mains selector panel.

Re: Help! Can any of you buffs identify this amplifier?
Thanks for the information, im thinking of restoring it to its former glory, but I'm a Vintage Radio Virgin lol, I've become a little rusty with my electronics skills but intend to revamp them and steer away from the modern PC repairs as there is just no joy in the end result
Thanks again.. Vaughan |

Reminds me of a Grampian I might have seen back in the 60s as well - but that might be a very misty memory!

It seems to have been repainted without much skill, so would need stripping down anyway.

I also have a Grampian with those red dials, the knobs and the same mains pilot light, in the same colour, but with a barrier strip at the rear. A cage lid goes over the top. Not exactly conclusive I admit

I think Vortexion used similar knobs and surrounds.

Re: Help! Can any of you buffs identify this amplifier?
Whilst RSC Kits did have 4 controls at the front, I don't recognise this as being one of theirs. Please do not take any offence, but this does seem a rather dubious project as it is unlikely that you will be able to trace any circuit diagram for it. Maybe much more rewarding for you to build/re-build a Mullard 3-3, 5-10 or 5-20 amplifier if you are just looking to have a Mono Hi Fi.

Re: Help! Can any of you buffs identify this amplifier?
Hello guys, thanks again. I will use this information.to do some googling. I have been looking at the valves and found 2x KT66 and a 5U4 HT rectifier if this helps.

Re: Help! Can any of you buffs identify this amplifier?
Hi Vaughan, do you know which valves are meant to be fitted? That may help to decide which type it is. These seems to be plenty of iron in the transformers, always a good sign.
If you are stuck I may have some used valves that would do and I'm not too far away. Ed |

And the output valves, the other 2 are 6J7 one as amplifier and one connected as triode driver with a transformer phase splitter.

Re: Help! Can any of you buffs identify this amplifier?
Have you acquired it yet? Those output valves on their own if in good condition electrically are worth a fair bit (probably north of £50 each).
The amp would be rated for around 30W, probably.
