I'm sure it's a good performer, and I accept that others may like it's appearance, we're all different after all, but to me it looks like a kit set or something; plasticky, basic knobs and scale etc. Too utilitarian for me. Sorry, that set just doesn't float my boat.

If you want a similar looking set to the Philips but UK made have a look at the Ferranti U1003 and the Ecko equivalent. They are FM/MW/LW like the Philips.
very easy to work on and decent performance.

perhaps too much choice now!

Edit: Just noticed the Philips is UK made.

Here's another in the Philetta range:

http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/philips...e_allstro.html

Not a bad looking set, apart from the grill section looking a little naff.

My personal favourite, quite modern looking.

'65/66 - quite late, the lines are very straight and crisp:

I find this an interesting set:

To all intents and purposes it appears to be a typical small valve Philips set of it's era. It's almost as though Philips have just stuck transistors into the valve holders!

Looks a great set Mark. Nice and small and 'old wireless' looking.

I'd forgotten about this one, the little HMV 1375....

If one can be found the HMV 1131 comes highly recommended, very good gain even on VHF although it did drift from time to time. I recall some 100 miles from Croydon LBC Radio could be received almost daily, (albeit weakly) using an indoor wire. A modern solid state equivalent couldn't unless tropospheric conditions were good!

Wish I still had mine. I have the Marconiphone equivalent which I'll get round to restoring one day.

Cheers,
Brian

That HMV is indeed a handsome set, but at 16", probably too big for my needs. I'm thinking more like 12" - as I say, DAC90 size-ish.

Grundig 97, although a touch bigger at 14".

Hi Guys, I got a Philips B3G97U from a good friend and it works fine despite having not received a full restoration - if any. I'll give it an MOT in due course but here it is pumping out Tony Blackburn's show on R2 in my kitchen.
