Sony ST-5950SD & Sansui D-95M
I have just recently acquired these two pieces of equipment;
Sony ST-5950SD tuner and Sansui D-95M tape deck Having had no previous experience of using modular audio equipment, especially vintage equipment, i have joined this forum to gain some knowledge and perhaps assemble the right equipment to make a modular system and learn how to do that. I should mention that the above peices of equipment came with no cables. So basically I am a complete novice. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Re: Sony ST-5950SD & Sansui D-95M
The next things you need are an Amplifier and Speakers.
Stuff from this era just keeps going, and it's a good way to build a Hi-Fi system. You also need Phono to Phono leads and spraker cable. And a record deck and CD player. Cheers, Steve P.

Re: Sony ST-5950SD & Sansui D-95M
thanks Steve
would i be right in thinking that the speaker cable would only attach to the amplifier and the amplifier attaches to the various pieces of equipment, ie Tuner, Tape Deck, Turn Table etc ? If So what types of cable would connect the various pieces of equipment to eachother ? I did some googling for amplifiers and saw Pre-Amps mentioned, is this something I would also need ? cheers |

Re: Sony ST-5950SD & Sansui D-95M
Right, well Speaker Cable goes from the Amp to the Speakers. Make sure both speakers are connected the same way - there's a stripe on one wire if you look.
Everything else goes into the amp, using Phono to Phono cables. Any Hi-Fi shop, or Maplin, will know exactly what one of those is if you go in and ask. Most amps have a pre-amp stage built in, so if you want a record deck, there is no reason to worry about these. Cheers, Steve P.

Re: Sony ST-5950SD & Sansui D-95M
Hello,
I collect old hi-fi as well as radios. 1970s Japanese hi-fi is better built and much easier to repair than kit built these days. Your Sony ST-5950SD tuner which dates from 1974 will probably still be in good working order and your 1981 Sansui D95M cassette recorder likewise although you may need to change its belts but they're inexpensive and still available. Most of my vintage kit came from Freecycle ie: it cost nothing, tuners, receivers, amps, loudspeakers, good old QED79 loudspeaker cables, CD players, cassette decks and amazingly it all still works - except for one NAD cassette recorder. Car boot sales are a good place for old hi-fi as well, I've recently acquired several tuners, receivers and CD players for £2-£5 apiece and they all work ! So for a small outlay you should be able to find a matching amplifier and loudspeakers to go with the above. You can use cheap 1.5mm or 2.5mm twin and earth mains cable as speaker cables, it's a bit unwieldy but it works a treat. Maplins do cheap phono to phono interconnects, Richer Sounds do better ones starting at £10 apiece. Howard |

Re: Sony ST-5950SD & Sansui D-95M
Right I have now acquired the Speakers (SS-X160) and Phono Cables -
Have hooked all of these up and must say that the Amp (JVC AS-5)is performing well together with the Tuner (Sony ST-5950SD) and Speakers (SS-X160) Only problem I am having is getting the Tape Deck (Sansui D-95M) to work - It powers up fine, but when a tape is put in and the play button is pressed, the tape doesn't go forward, fast forward or fast back - I have asked the person who gave me this peice of equipment if when they last used it, that it worked ? They told me it did - So I'm at a loss as to why it now doesn't function ? Any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks |

Check the condition of the drive belts, usual problem with machines of this vintage:-

Re: Sony ST-5950SD & Sansui D-95M
I'm not familiar with this deck but most are similar inside. Basically you need to remove the top cover,(unplug the mains first!), Look for the motor, a metal cylindrical thing behind the tape door area. The belts which look like black rubber bands are hidden behind the motor and connect it to the flywheel and usually another one goes to the tape counter. These belts go soft or break with age and are available cheaply in many sizes. A certain amount of dismantling may be needed to fit new ones depending on the mechanism. I expect one of our tape experts will advise further.
Regards, Mick. |

Pull off all the rotary knobs, then undo the 3(?) screws top and bottom which hold the front aluminium panel to the steel chassis. You may also need to at least open the door, and maybe even remove it's facia which clips on. I think you slide it upwards about 1/2cm and then it comes off. Good luck, Nick. |

Re: Sony ST-5950SD & Sansui D-95M
OK here are two images i have taken with the camera;
The first shows the Tape Deck after the bottom aluminium panel has been removed and shows the other side of the tape mechanism https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...1&d=1252099860 and the second shows the front after the facia panel has been removed https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...1&d=1252099964 I'm still not sure what it is i'm looking for ? |

Re: Sony ST-5950SD & Sansui D-95M
The main belt that couples the motor to the flywheel is nowhere to be seen!
It should be black, flat and about 4mm wide. I've traced its position in red... Nick. |

Re: Sony ST-5950SD & Sansui D-95M
OK have just checked thoroughly trying to see under the Motherboard (?) but nothing
looks like whoever had it previously did remove it ? I'm assuming going by what Mick said earlier in the thread that this can be replaced, but from looking at it, i again assume that i would have to remove the MB (?) and perhaps other pieces to attach a new belt ? John |

Re: Sony ST-5950SD & Sansui D-95M
The flywheel is held in place by a diamond-shaped bracket. Removing this will allow you to replace the belt. No need to remove the main PCB!
I have a suspicion it's got slack and has slipped behind the flywheel (or in front of it but behind the bracket), out of sight. Somewhere, I have details of which generic belt I used to replace the original on this very deck. Nick. |
