Default 1937 Marconi 703 "Mastergram" at BVWS RWB

Hello All,

At the BVWS Royal Wootton Bassett Auction on the 7th December 2014 we will be offering for sale by Auction a completely original 1937 Marconi 703 "Mastergram" as pictured.

There are only five other 703's known to exist. One of these may be duplicated, so it could just be four!

This has never been seen before by the collector community and is completely fresh to the market after being dry stored and covered over for about 40 years.

It is in very good condition and complete.

Here are a couple of initial pictures of the set. Better ones will appear on the BVWS website with all of the other auction pictures in a couple of weeks time.

Mike...

The price will be out of that, what the average TV-collector is able to pay.

Hi Mike, The 703 looks excellent. Could you please give me the chassis and serial numbers if it's not already on the list? Thanks, Peter

I used to have a Marconi 703 in my collection. Goodness knows why I sold it, I regret doing that. I'll think about that one.
I'd find room for it.

These "extreme" sets are too large for most people and this does limit the attraction and often do not attract the very high prices that are seen for other, smaller MKI EMI sets - so you never know!
What wonderful veneering!

I wonder why the hugely different serial numbers on the newly found 703 and mine: 2362 Y and H/1 99! Did EMI number their output of TVs (say) sequetially, regardless of type?

I wonder if there may be a pattern in the leading digits of early "H" series receivers as follows:

702's have a leading "1"
900's have a leading "6"
901's have a leading "7"

The latter three digits of each serial number form the individual sequence number. This would mean there was a maximum of 999 numbers to allocate to each model in the "H" series.

Later on the H/1 series commences:

702's have a leading "4"
705's have a leading "8"
900's have a leading "10"
901's have a leading "6"

There appears to be insufficient data to suggest any further patterns at present. I wouldn't be surprised if other sets turn up and disprove the aforementioned patterns!

John.

I expect this link has been posted before but it came up on a search to find out more about the 703.

It's a real mystery and one that I hope will become clear as more sets are added to the table. John's suggestion could well be the basis of it.

The chassis that are common to the various models appear to be simply numbered in production sequence.

Hello Gentlemen,

Friend Wilfrid sent me this link to a HMV-900 for sale in Strasbourg, France, via "Le Bon Coin" auction site ---> no feedback rating.

Asking price is 2600 Euros, cheap for a 1937 set

http://www.leboncoin.fr/collection/735382749.htm

a hoax/scam?

Best Regards

The Strasbourg photos show H 6181 in the list. It was advertised on eBay in October by the grandson of the original owner and appears to have sold for £5400. He was based in London and sounded absolutely genuine in his description. Info still present in Completed Listings.

The pictures on "Le Bon Coin" have been lifted from eBay. Undoubtedly a scam in my opinion.

Unless someone knows different, let's not discuss it further.

It is definately a scam. My brother bought H 6181 off eBay, and it is not for sale. We collected it from London 3 weeks ago, but haven't had any time to look at it much. I'll let my brother give more details and post the chassis serial numbers.
