Default Defiant Valve Radio Identification.

Hello,

Can any kind soul identify this Defiant (Co-op) valve radio. There are no markings whatsoever either inside or outside of the case.

I bought it on a whim as it seems to be vaguely familar... I think my Grandmother had one when I was very young.

Any information greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Bodge99

Ah yes, bodge99. The Defiant he has found is, like many others, probably a Plessey on the inside. You should be able to work your way round it given the valve data.

Try this set, on Paul's other site...

Or maybe this one....

Defiant stuff is normally easy to work on and is well made. Nice set that.

Cheers,

Steve P.

I've got one exactly the same and like you, I've no idea what model it is, nor could I identify the chassis.

Here you go It's featured in the same little '53-4 sales brochure where I found Paul's set seen in the second of Steve's two links above.

What does the brochure mean by "9000 lines"?

It's to do with the strength of the magnet in the speaker, in the CGS measurement system.

"Maxwell - The unit of magnetic flux in the cgs electromagnetic system. One Maxwell is one line of magnetic flux ... "

See the glossary of terms here, under Maxwell. http://www.arnoldmagnetics.com/mtc/g...glossary_m.htm

The mystery has been solved, but it might be of interest to know that back in 2005, Paul Stenning posted a message with a link to "The Defiant Story", written in 1991 in the Co-Op News.

The 2-page article outlined how the Co-Op Wholesale Society came to go into radio supply, and why it chose the name "Defiant" and a knight in shining armour, having taken the (moral?) high ground, as its logo.

(The CWS only made the cabinets - Plessey made the innards).

Well worth a read:

Hello all.

Who needs Google with you guys around.

Thanks to everyone who took the time and trouble to furnish information. Your help is really appreciated.

For anyone who is interested, I have some further info.

Serial No: R5977

Valves: 6C9 6F15 6LD20 6P25 UU9

On closer examination in better light, I discovered the faint remains of what appears to be a datestamp on the underside of the case adjacent to one of the feet. It appears to be dated 06/10/51. This is actually my birthday, only a few years older than me.

The radio appears to be relatively unmolested, however it is missing its tuning pointer, the voltage selector link and the underside access panel. Does anyone know what would have been fitted here??

The chassis appears to be the same as the MSH353 shown in the link given in Steve P's post above.

Again, many thanks for the help.

Regards,

Bodge99
