819-Line TV From PC - First Pictures!
 

Hi,

Having got the Sondyna TV working, it was only a matter of time... ;D

Having worked out the X modeline I just had to try it. It's all a bit of a lashup at the moment using a UHF PAL-I modulator. Vision bandwidth is nowhere near the huge 10MHz demanded by System E; so horizontal resolution is a little compromised. Building a System E modulator is on my list.

It's weird watching TV and hearing no timebase whistle. I can hear 15.625kHz, but not 20.475kHz...

The set also needs further attention, by the time I'd taken these photos I'd started to notice a smell... the familiar one you get just before a large electrolytic lets go, so it got switched off rather rapidly... 8-o

If there's a TV demo arranged for NVCF next year and I've sorted the set out so it'll last the day, would anyone like to see 819-line in action?

Considering the lack of bandwidth the pictures are extremely good!

I'm pretty impressed myself, the lack of bandwidth shows more clearly on smaller text. Movies are quite watchable at the moment, though. Must get cracking on a modulator, it can only get better.

The lack of visible line structure in the photos is what it's like for real, though at 800 x 600 the photos are lower resolution than the TV. Those are 1152 x 738 pictures there. 8-)

You've really got to get quite close up to see the lines, and that's a 23" set. It's pretty impressive. Who said high-definition TV was a new thing? :)

I'll post some technical details and the X modeline presently (I've come up with a better way of calculating them and have an improved 405-line one coming soon...)

Well done Kat.

I have seen 819 line TV as broadcast though under far from optimum conditions. It was in Brussels sometime in the late 1960s or early 70s on a small set with marginal signal strength. The programme I saw was the Forsyte Saga (BBC 1967) dubbed into French. I remember noting the inaudible line whistle. It was common at that time in Brussels to have great christmas trees of aerials to receive channels from a fair bit of Europe. Cable systems were common too and sometimes carried BBC TV, picked up at a head end near the coast.

I doubt if any French studios were running 819 by then. Just as we weren't running any 405. So all 819 pictures were up converted from 625.

WHAT is that? It looks like something out of the Twilight Zone...which always seems more terrifying when watched on an old black & white set.

P.S. Did you ever get the mains plug issue sorted out?

Hi,
Yet another bit of gear intercepted on the way to the skip at work about a decade ago - I resoldered one dry joint and it's been fine since. Seems reasonably accurate, too. Close enough for what I need, anyway :)

Meanwhile, back on topic... as promised, the modeline used for the above has been posted here along with another one for 405-line.

Is focusing more of a problem with 819 lines as the spot must be smaller,and i know on early colour tv`s convergance must have been an issue.:-)
