Record player speed fluctuating

Hello again
I've another question regarding my Garrard RC60 deck.
I have had my radiogram working for a few months now thanks to a very kind friend on here who came and sorted out my incorrect wiring!
I have noticed recently that the record player speed keeps fluctuating up and down then back to the correct speed. I have no idea why this could be happening and wonder if anyone could give me a little guidance as to what could be causing this and if there is anything I can do to try and rectify it.

Many thanks

Steve

Re: Record player speed fluctuating

Sounds like an Idler problem. Check the Idler to see if it is (A) out of shape in any way around the edge, or (B) the edge of the idler has gone hard and glossy. If (A) a new one is required, some will say immerse in hot water, but I boiled one for twenty mins with out success. If (B) then a light rub round the edge with fine sandpaper should do, also check the inside rim of the turntable for greasy deposits. Hope this helps,
Gaz.

Yes, sounds like an idler problem to me too. I would add that you check the motor spindle for deposits...

Cheers,
Steve.

Re: Record player speed fluctuating

Wipe the rubber idler wheel firmly with a soft dry cloth with a very small area dipped in Cellulose Paint Thinner. It might just help too.

Re: Record player speed fluctuating

I got around to looking at the deck today. Took the turntable off and remembered - no idler wheel in this deck. The speed is controlled in the motor itself. I don't know the correct terminology for the kind, but it is more like the old wind up gramophone motors.
Anyway, I took out the deck and took a look at the speed control which was caked in years worth of dirt and grease, much of which was black and solid. The whole motor has had a good clean and a little fresh grease and oil and so far seems to be behaving much better.
Many thanks for the tips.
