If you use FireFox as your browser, there are a number of dictionaries that can be added and will mark mistakes as you type.

They can be corrected by selecting the word and a right click for suggestions.

Typing standards and post presentation.

The Moderators are having to spend an increasing amount of time dealing with lazily typed posts containing, to give some examples, no punctuation, incorrect and/or excessive punctuation, atrocious spelling errors, lack of capital letters where required, two or more words joined together, lack of paragraphing in longer posts. The list, unfortunately, goes on.

In drawing attention to Forum Rule Section B (http://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/../rules.html), such posts are difficult to read and can result in members simply giving up when they may otherwise be able to offer help with whatever the problem might be.

A fictitious but nevertheless typical example of what we're increasingly having to deal with might be something like this:

---Quote---
hey ill getback 2u when ive checked it out.......thanx!!!!!!!!! ne1-help me with-enother problem-cracked bakalite????????!!!!!!!.........notin 2do with my ecko transsister , , , , ne1 gotta sirkit 4that so ill try 2sort it??????!!!!!!!! lol!!!
---End Quote---
Not only is there the problem, mentioned above, of members simply abandoning their attempts to read such posts, there is also the very real risk of something being misinterpreted with possible dire consequencies. Related to that, the Moderators occasionally have to withdraw a post from public view and then have a discussion to try and ascertain what the post actually means. In fact only recently we had one such post which read as though its OP was trying to say he was ill, so bad was the typing, spelling, punctuation and general composition of the post. We worked out that the word "ill" was a mistype for "I will" or "I'll" in shortened form. All this consumes our time as volunteers and delays thread progression which, in turn, is frustrating for other members.

The Moderators are aware of certain members being dyslexic and do make allowances for that. However, much bad typing is simply down to laziness and/or a misguided desire to come across as a supposedly 'with it' youngster texting on a mobile 'phone. Furthermore, it does not inspire confidence among new members who join, or simply read, the forums with the intention of seeking assistance or information.

We occasionally get members from non English speaking countries who apologise for their English being none too good. Frankly, their English is frequently better than that of those from English speaking countries.

The problem is on the increase and such posts are likely to be _deleted_ without warning from now on. We cannot allow our forums to degenerate but, at the same time, we do have numerous other tasks to perform - most of which the membership is unaware of.

With the best will in the world, everyone makes spelling, punctuation and other errors from time to time and that includes the Moderators. There is a huge difference, however, between that and such as has been given as an example above containing textspeak, needless and annoying streams of exclamation and question marks etc.

On behalf of the moderation team, thanks for reading and for your co-operation.

I tried to give a brief reply to a thread by simply giving a valve name: 6Q7G. It kept getting changed to 6q7g. I then put in a comment about this, and the unwanted case conversion went away.

Is there some clever wizard in the server which assumes I had caps lock on so helpfully corrected my 'error'? I assume my comment, in lower case, reassured the wizard that I really meant what I had typed.
